|
As David's life drew to its close he laid this charge on his son Solomon,

▶ 다윗은 죽을 날이 가까워지자, 자기 아들 솔로몬에게 이렇게 일렀다.

"I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong and show yourself a man.
|

▶ “나는 이제 세상 모든 사람이 가는 길을 간다. 너는 사나이답게 힘을 내어라.
|
|

|
Observe the injunctions of Yahweh your God, following his ways and keeping his laws, his commandments, his ordinances and his decrees, as stands written in the Law of Moses, so that you may be successful in everything you do and undertake,

|
|
▶ 주 네 하느님의 명령을 지켜 그분의 길을 걸으며, 또 모세 법에 기록된 대로 하느님의 규정과 계명, 법규와 증언을 지켜라. 그러면 네가 무엇을 하든지 어디로 가든지 성공할 것이다.

|
and that Yahweh may fulfill the promise which he made me, "If your sons are careful how they behave, and walk loyally before me with all their heart and soul, you will never want for a man on the throne of Israel."

▶ 또한 주님께서 나에게 ‘네 자손들이 제 길을 지켜 내 앞에서 마음과 정성을 다하여 성실히 걸으면, 네 자손 가운데에서 이스라엘의 왕좌에 오를 사람이 끊어지지 않을 것이다.’ 하신 당신 약속을 그대로 이루어 주실 것이다.

'You know too what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two commanders of the army of Israel, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether; how he murdered them, shedding the blood of war in time of peace and staining the belt round my waist and the sandals on my feet with the blood of war.

▶ 더구나 너는 츠루야의 아들 요압이 나에게 한 짓, 곧 이스라엘 군대의 두 장수, 네르의 아들 아브네르와 예테르의 아들 아마사에게 한 짓을 알고 있다. 요압은 그들을 죽여 전쟁 때에 흘린 피를 평화로운 때에 갚음으로써, 그 피를 자기 허리띠와 신발에 묻혔다.

You will be wise not to let his grey head go down to Sheol in peace.

|
▶ 그러니 너는 지혜롭게 처신하여, 백발이 성성한 그자가 평안히 저승으로 내려가지 못하게 하여라.

|
As regards the sons of Barzillai of Gilead, treat them with faithful love, let them be among those who eat at your table, for they were as kind to me when I was fleeing from your brother Absalom.

▶ 그러나 길앗 사람 바르질라이의 아들들에게는 자애를 베풀어, 네 식탁에서 함께 먹게 하여라. 그들은 내가 네 형 압살롬을 피해 달아날 때, 나를 그렇듯 충성스럽게 맞아 주었다.

You also have with you Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim. He called down a terrible curse on me the day I left for Mahanaim, but he came down to meet me at the Jordan and I swore to him by Yahweh that I would not put him to death.

▶ 또 바후림 출신으로 벤야민 사람인 게라의 아들 시므이가 너와 함께 있는데, 그는 내가 마하나임에 간 날 나를 심하게 저주한 자다. 그렇지만 그가 요르단 강으로 나를 마중 나왔을 때, 나는 주님을 두고 ‘그대를 칼로 죽이지 않겠소.’ 하고 맹세하였다.

But you, you must not let him go unpunished; you are a wise man and will know how to deal with him, to bring his grey head down to Sheol in blood.'

▶ 그러나 너는 지혜로운 사람이니, 이제 그런 자에게 벌을 내리지 않은 채 그냥 두지 마라. 너는 그를 어떻게 처리해야 할지 알 것이다. 백발이 성성한 그자가 피를 흘리며 저승으로 내려가게 해야 한다.”

So David fell asleep with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David.

David was king of Israel for a period of forty years: he reigned at Hebron for seven years, and in Jerusalem for thirty-three.

▶ 다윗이 이스라엘을 다스린 기간은 마흔 해이다. 헤브론에서 일곱 해, 예루살렘에서 서른세 해를 다스렸다.

When Solomon was seated on the throne of his father David, with his sovereignty firmly established,

The Kingdom Made Secure
|

|
|

|
Adonijah, son of Haggith, went to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon. "Do you come as a friend?" she asked. "Yes," he answered,

|
|
▶ 하낏의 아들 아도니야가 솔로몬의 어머니 밧 세바를 찾아갔다. 밧 세바가 “좋은 마음으로 왔느냐?” 하고 묻자, 그는 “좋은 마음으로 왔습니다.” 하고 대답하였다.

|
and added, "I have something to say to you." She replied, "Say it."
|

|
|
▶ 그러면서 그가 “드릴 말씀이 있습니다.” 하였다. “말해 보아라.” 하고 밧 세바가 허락하자,

|
So he said: "You know that the kingdom was mine, and all Israel expected me to be king. But the kingdom escaped me and became my brother's, for the LORD gave it to him.
|

|
▶ 그는 이렇게 말하였다. “모후께서도 아시다시피 이 나라는 제 것이었습니다. 그리고 온 이스라엘도 제가 임금이 될 것으로 기대하고 있었습니다. 그런데 이제 나라가 뒤집어져 아우의 것이 되었습니다. 그가 주님에게서 그것을 받았기 때문입니다.

|
But now there is one favor I would ask of you. Do not refuse me." And she said, "Speak on."

▶ 이제 모후께 한 가지 청을 드리니 거절하지 마십시오.” 밧 세바가 그에게 “말해 보아라.” 하자,

He said, "Please ask King Solomon, who will not refuse you, to give me Abishag the Shunamite for my wife."
|

|
|
|
▶ 그는 이렇게 청하였다. “솔로몬 임금님에게 말하여 수넴 여자 아비삭을 제게 주어 아내로 삼게 해 주십시오. 임금님은 모후의 청을 거절하지 않을 것입니다.”

"Very well," replied Bathsheba, "I will speak to the king for you."
|

|
|
▶ 밧 세바가 대답하였다. “좋다. 내가 너를 위하여 임금에게 말해 주마.”
|
|

|
Then Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, and the king stood up to meet her and paid her homage. Then he sat down upon his throne, and a throne was provided for the king's mother, who sat at his right.

|
▶ 그리하여 밧 세바는 아도니야를 위하여 청을 하러 솔로몬 임금에게 갔다. 임금은 일어나 어머니를 맞으며 절하고 왕좌에 앉았다. 그리고 임금의 어머니를 위해서도 의자를 가져오게 하여 그를 자기 오른쪽에 앉게 하였다.

"There is one small favor I would ask of you," she said. "Do not refuse me." "Ask it, my mother," the king said to her, "for I will not refuse you."

|
▶ 밧 세바가 “작은 청이 하나 있는데, 거절하지 마시오.” 하자, 임금이 그에게 “어머니, 말씀하십시오. 거절하지 않겠습니다.” 하고 대답하였다.

So she said, "Let Abishag the Shunamite be given to your brother Adonijah for his wife."
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 밧 세바가 말하였다. “수넴 여자 아비삭을 임금의 형 아도니야에게 주어 아내로 삼게 해 주시오.”
|
|

|
"And why do you ask Abishag the Shunamite for Adonijah?" King Solomon answered his mother. "Ask the kingdom for him as well, for he is my elder brother and has with him Abiathar the priest and Joab, son of Zeruiah."
|

▶ 이에 솔로몬 임금이 어머니에게 대답하였다. “어찌하여 어머니께서는 아도니야를 위하여 수넴 여자 아비삭을 청하십니까? 차라리 그에게 나라를 주라고 청하시지요! 그는 저의 형이고, 또 그의 편에 에브야타르 사제와 츠루야의 아들 요압도 있으니 말입니다.”

|
And King Solomon swore by the LORD: "May God do thus and so to me, and more besides, if Adonijah has not proposed this at the cost of his life.

▶ 그러고 나서 솔로몬 임금은 주님을 두고 맹세하였다. “아도니야가 자기 목숨을 걸고 이런 말을 하였으니, 그 목숨을 살려 두면 하느님께서 저에게 벌을 내리시고 또 내리실 것입니다.

|
And now, as the LORD lives, who has seated me firmly on the throne of my father David and made of me a dynasty as he promised, this day shall Adonijah be put to death."

|
▶ 이제 저를 세우시어 아버지 다윗의 왕좌에 앉히시고, 말씀하신 대로 저에게 집안을 일으켜 주신, 살아 계신 주님을 두고 맹세합니다. 아도니야는 오늘 죽을 것입니다.”

|
Then King Solomon sent Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, who struck him dead.
|

|
|
▶ 그러고 나서 솔로몬 임금이 여호야다의 아들 브나야를 보내어 아도니야를 내려치게 하니, 아도니야가 죽었다.

|
The king said to Abiathar the priest: "Go to your land in Anathoth. Though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death this time, because you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David and shared in all the hardships my father endured."
|

|
▶ 임금은 에브야타르 사제에게 이렇게 말하였다. “아나톳에 있는 그대의 땅으로 가시오. 그대는 죽어 마땅한 사람이지만, 그대가 나의 아버지 다윗 앞에서 주 하느님의 궤를 날랐고, 또 아버지와 온갖 고난을 함께 나누었으므로 오늘 그대를 죽이지 않겠소.”

|
So Solomon deposed Abiathar from his office of priest of the LORD, thus fulfilling the prophecy which the LORD had made in Shiloh about the house of Eli.

|
▶ 그런 다음 솔로몬은 에브야타르를 주님의 사제직에서 내쫓았다. 그리하여 주님께서 실로에 있는 엘리 집안을 두고 하신 말씀이 그대로 이루어졌다.

|
When the news came to Joab, who had sided with Adonijah, though not with Absalom, he fled to the tent of the LORD and seized the horns of the altar.
|

|
|
|
▶ 이 소식이 요압에게 전해졌다. 그는 압살롬을 지지하지는 않았지만 아도니야를 지지하였기 때문에, 주님의 천막으로 도망쳐 제단의 뿔을 잡았다.

|
King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD and was at the altar. He sent Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, with the order, "Go, strike him down."
|

|
▶ 솔로몬 임금은 요압이 주님의 천막으로 도망쳐 제단 곁에 있다는 보고를 듣고, 여호야다의 아들 브나야를 보내며, “가서 그를 내려치시오.” 하고 일렀다.

|
Benaiah went to the tent of the LORD and said to him, "The king says, 'Come out.'" But he answered, "No! I will die here." Benaiah reported to the king, "This is what Joab said to me in reply."
|

|
▶ 브나야가 주님의 천막으로 가서 요압에게 “어명이오. 나오시오!” 하고 말하였다. 그러나 그는 “못 나가겠소. 차라리 여기서 죽겠소.” 하고 대답하였다. 브나야가 임금에게 돌아가서 “요압이 이러저러하게 저에게 대답하였습니다.” 하고 보고하자,

The king answered him: "Do as he has said, Strike him down and bury him, and you will remove from me and from my family the blood which Joab shed without provocation.
|

▶ 임금이 다시 브나야에게 일렀다. “그가 말한 대로 해 주시오. 그를 내려치고 묻으시오. 그리하여 요압이 흘린 죄없는 사람의 피를 나와 내 아버지 집안에서 치워 주시오.

|
The LORD will hold him responsible for his own blood, because he struck down two men better and more just than himself, and slew them with the sword without my father David's knowledge: Abner, son of Ner, general of Israel's army, and Amasa, son of Jether, general of Judah's army.

|
▶ 주님께서는 요압이 흘린 피에 대한 책임을 그의 머리 위로 돌리실 것이오. 사실 요압은 나의 아버지 다윗께서 모르시는 사이에, 자기보다 의롭고 나은 두 사람, 이스라엘 군대의 장수 네르의 아들 아브네르와 유다 군대의 장수 예테르의 아들 아마사를 칼로 내려쳐 죽였소.

Joab and his descendants shall be responsible forever for their blood. But there shall be the peace of the LORD forever for David, and his descendants, and his house, and his throne."

|
|
▶ 그들의 피에 대한 책임은 요압의 머리와 그 후손의 머리 위로 영원히 돌아가고, 다윗과 그 후손, 그 집안과 왕좌는 주님에게서 영원토록 평화를 얻게 될 것이오.”

|
Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, went back, struck him down and killed him; he was buried in his house in the desert.
|

|
▶ 그리하여 여호야다의 아들 브나야는 요압이 있는 데로 올라가 그를 내려쳐 죽였다. 요압은 광야에 있는 자기 집에 묻혔다.

|
The king appointed Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, over the army in his place, and put Zadok the priest in place of Abiathar.
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 임금은 요압의 자리에 여호야다의 아들 브나야를 임명하여 군대를 지휘하게 하고, 에브야타르의 자리에는 차독 사제를 임명하였다.
|

|
Then the king summoned Shimei and said to him: "Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there. Do not go anywhere else.
|

|
|
▶ 그 뒤 임금은 사람을 보내어, 시므이를 불러다 놓고 말하였다. “너는 예루살렘에 집을 짓고 거기에서 살아라. 그리고 거기에서 다른 어느 곳으로도 나가면 안 된다.

|
For if you leave, and cross the Kidron Valley, be certain you shall die without fail. You shall be responsible for your own blood."
|

|
|
▶ 나가서 키드론 시내를 건너는 날에는 네가 정녕 죽을 줄 알아라. 네 피에 대한 책임이 네 머리 위로 돌아갈 것이다.”

|
Shimei answered the king: "I accept. Your servant will do just as the king's majesty has said." So Shimei stayed in Jerusalem for a long time.
|

|
▶ 시므이가 임금에게 대답하였다. “지당하신 말씀입니다. 이 종은 저의 주군이신 임금님께서 말씀하신 대로 하겠습니다.” 그리하여 시므이는 예루살렘에서 한동안 살았다.

But three years later, two of Shimei's servants ran away to Achish, son of Maacah, king of Gath, and Shimei was informed that his servants were in Gath.

▶ 그런데 세 해가 지날 무렵, 시므이의 종 둘이 갓 임금 마아카의 아들 아키스에게 달아났다. 사람들이 시므이에게 “나리의 종들이 갓에 있습니다.” 하고 알리자,

So Shimei rose, saddled his ass, and went to Achish in Gath in search of his servants, whom he brought back.
|

▶ 시므이는 일어나 나귀에 안장을 얹고 자기 종들을 찾으러 갓에 있는 아키스에게 갔다. 그가 직접 가서 종들을 데려왔던 것이다.

|
When Solomon was informed that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had returned,

▶ 시므이가 예루살렘을 떠나 갓에 다녀온 일이 솔로몬에게 보고되었다.

|
the king summoned Shimei and said to him: "Did I not have you swear by the LORD to your clear understanding of my warning that, if you left and went anywhere else, you should die without fail? And you answered, 'I accept and obey.'

|
▶ 임금은 사람을 보내어 시므이를 불러다 놓고 말하였다. “내가 너에게 주님을 두고 맹세하게 하지 않았느냐? ‘네가 여기에서 나가 어느 곳으로든 가는 날에는 정녕 죽을 줄 알아라.’ 하고 내가 경고하지 않았느냐? 그리고 너도 ‘지당하신 말씀이니 순종하겠습니다.’ 하였다.

|
Why, then, have you not kept the oath of the LORD and the command that I gave you?"

|
▶ 그런데 어찌하여 너는 주님을 두고 한 맹세와 내가 너에게 내린 명령을 지키지 않았느냐?”

|
And the king said to Shimei: "You know in your heart the evil that you did to my father David. Now the LORD requites you for your own wickedness.
|

|
|
▶ 임금이 계속해서 시므이에게 말하였다. “네가 내 아버지 다윗에게 한 온갖 못된 짓을 너 자신이 마음속으로 잘 알고 있을 것이다. 주님께서 네가 저지른 악을 네 머리 위로 돌아가게 하실 것이다.

But King Solomon shall be blessed, and David's throne shall endure before the LORD forever."
|

|
|
▶ 그러나 나 솔로몬 임금은 복을 받으며 다윗의 왕좌는 주님 앞에서 영원히 튼튼해질 것이다.”

|
The king then gave the order to Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, who struck him dead as he left.

▶ 그러고 나서 임금이 여호야다의 아들 브나야에게 명령하니, 브나야가 나가서 시므이를 내려치자 그가 죽었다. 이리하여 솔로몬의 손안에서 왕권이 튼튼해졌다.
