Esther replied: "This is my petition and request:

▶ 에스테르가 대답하였다. “저의 소청과 저의 소원을 말하라 하십니까?

if I have found favor with the king and if it pleases your majesty to grant my petition and honor my request, come with Haman tomorrow to a banquet which I shall prepare for you; and then I will do as you ask."

▶ 제가 임금님의 눈에 들어, 임금님께서 기꺼이 저의 소청을 들어주시고 저의 소원을 이루어 주시겠다면, 제가 마련하는 연회에 임금님께서 하만과 함께 다시 와 주셨으면 합니다. 그러면 내일 임금님의 분부대로 하겠습니다.”

Haman's Plot against Mordecai

▶ 교만한 하만이 복수심에 불타다

|
That day Haman left happy and in good spirits. But when he saw that Mordecai at the royal gate did not rise, and showed no fear of him, he was filled with anger toward him.
|

▶ 그날 하만은 기쁘고 흐뭇한 마음으로 자리를 물러 나왔다. 그런데 하만이 궁궐 대문에서 모르도카이를 보았는데도, 그가 자기 앞에서 일어서지도 않고 경의도 표하지 않자, 하만은 모르도카이에 대한 노기로 가득 찼다.

Haman restrained himself, however, and went home, where he summoned his friends and his wife Zeresh.

▶ 그러나 하만은 꾹 참고 집에 돌아가 친구들과 자기 아내 제레스를 불러오게 하였다.

He recounted the greatness of his riches, the large number of his sons, and just how the king had promoted him and placed him above the officials and royal servants.
|

|
▶ 하만은 그들에게 자기의 막대한 재산과 자식이 많은 것을 자랑하고, 임금이 자기를 영예롭게 해 준 모든 것이며 임금의 모든 대신과 시종들보다 높은 지위에 올려 준 것을 자랑스레 이야기하였다.

"Moreover," Haman added, "Queen Esther invited no one but me to the banquet with the king; again tomorrow I am to be her guest, with the king.
|

|
▶ 그리고 덧붙여 말하였다. “그뿐만 아니라, 에스테르 왕비는 손수 마련한 연회에 나만 임금님과 함께 오도록 했다오. 게다가 나는 내일도 임금님과 함께 그분께 초대를 받았소.

Yet none of this satisfies me as long as I continue to see the Jew Mordecai sitting at the royal gate."

▶ 그렇지만 유다인 모르도카이가 궁궐 대문에서 근무하는 것을 보는 한, 이 모든 것이 내게는 만족스럽지 않소.”

His wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, "Have a gibbet set up, fifty cubits in height, and in the morning ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on it. Then go to the banquet with the king in good cheer." This suggestion pleased Haman, and he had the gibbet erected.

▶ 그러자 그의 아내 제레스와 그의 모든 친구들이 말하였다. “높이 쉰 자짜리 말뚝을 만들어, 내일 아침에 임금님께 말씀드려서 모르도카이를 거기에 매달게 하십시오. 그러고 나서 임금님과 함께 기쁘게 연회에 가십시오.” 이 제안이 하만의 마음에 들어 말뚝을 만들게 하였다.

Now on the third day, Esther put on her royal garments and stood in the inner courtyard, looking toward the royal palace, while the king was seated on his royal throne in the audience chamber, facing the palace doorway.

▶ 사흘째 되는 날, 에스테르는 왕비의 정장을 하고서 왕궁을 마주 보고 그 앞뜰에 섰다. 임금은 궁궐 안 왕좌에 대문을 마주하고 앉아 있었다.

He saw Queen Esther standing in the courtyard, and made her welcome by extending toward her the golden staff which he held. She came up to him, and touched the top of the staff.

▶ 에스테르 왕비가 뜰에 서 있는 것을 임금이 보고 그를 귀엽게 여겼다. 그래서 임금이 자기 손에 든 황금 왕홀을 그에게 내밀자, 에스테르는 가서 왕홀 끝에 손을 대었다.

On the third day, putting an end to her prayers, she took off her penitential garments and arrayed herself in her royal attire.

In making her state appearance, after invoking the all-seeing God and savior, she took with her two maids;

▶ 그는 호화롭게 차려입고서, 모든 것을 보시는 구원자 하느님께 간청한 뒤, 두 시녀를 데리고 나섰다.

on the one she leaned gently for support,

▶ 그리고 기운이 없는 듯 한 시녀에게 몸을 기대자,

while the other followed her, bearing her train.

▶ 다른 시녀가 그의 옷자락을 받쳐 들고 뒤를 따랐다.

|
She glowed with the perfection of her beauty and her countenance was as joyous as it was lovely, though her heart was shrunk with fear.
|

|
|
▶ 홍조를 띤 에스테르는 지극히 아름다웠다. 그의 얼굴은 사랑받는 여인처럼 화사했지만, 마음은 두려움으로 조여들었다.

She passed through all the portals till she stood face to face with the king, who was seated on his royal throne, clothed in full robes of state, and covered with gold and precious stones, so that he inspired great awe.
|

|
|
▶ 에스테르는 문들을 모두 지나서 임금 앞에 섰다. 임금은 온통 금과 보석으로 번쩍이는 어의로 성장하고 자기 왕국의 왕좌에 앉아 있었는데, 그는 보기에도 두려운 모습이었다.

As he looked up, his features ablaze with the height of majestic anger, the queen staggered, changed color, and leaned weakly against the head of the maid in front of her.

▶ 그가 영광으로 빛나는 얼굴을 들고 지극히 노여운 눈으로 쳐다보자, 왕비는 실신하여 쓰러지면서 창백한 얼굴로, 앞서 가는 시녀의 머리에 몸을 기대었다.

But God changed the king's anger to gentleness. In great anxiety he sprang from his throne, held her in his arms until she recovered, and comforted her with reassuring words.

▶ 그때 하느님께서 임금의 영을 부드럽게 바꾸어 놓으시자, 임금은 깜짝 놀라 왕좌에서 벌떡 일어나 왕비가 정신을 차릴 때까지 그를 팔에 안았다. 그러고서는 다정한 말로 위로하며

"What is it, Esther?" he said to her. "I am your brother. Take courage!
|

▶ 말하였다. “에스테르, 웬일이오? 나는 당신의 오라버니요. 안심하오.
|

|
You shall not die because of this general decree of ours.
|

|
|
▶ 당신은 죽지 않을 것이오. 우리의 법규는 평민들을 위한 것이라오.

Come near!"

▶ 다가오시오.”

Raising the golden scepter, he touched her neck with it, embraced her, and said, "Speak to me."
|

|
▶ 그러고는 황금 왕홀을 들어 에스테르의 목에 댄 다음 그를 껴안아 입 맞추고 말하였다. “나에게 말해 보오.”

She replied: "I saw you, my lord, as an angel of God, and my heart was troubled with fear of your majesty.
|

|
▶ 에스테르가 그에게 말하였다. “임금님, 저에게는 임금님이 하느님의 천사처럼 보였습니다. 그래서 임금님의 영광에 대한 두려움으로 저의 마음은 혼란에 빠졌습니다.

For you are awesome, my lord, though your glance is full of kindness."
|
성경 ▼

|
|
|
|
▶ 임금님은 놀라우신 분이십니다. 임금님, 또한 임금님의 얼굴은 인자하심으로 충만합니다.”

|
As she said this, she fainted.
|

|
▶ 에스테르는 이렇게 말하다가 실신하여 쓰러졌다.

|
The king became troubled and all his attendants tried to revive her.
|

|
|
|
|
|
▶ 그러자 임금은 깜짝 놀라고 그의 시종들은 모두 왕비를 위로하였다.
|
|

Then the king said to her, "What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? Even if it is half of my kingdom, it shall be granted you."
|

|
|
|
|
|
▶ 임금이 그에게 말하였다. “에스테르 왕비, 무슨 일이오? 그대의 소원이 무엇이오? 왕국의 반이라도 그대에게 주겠소.”
|
|

"If it please your majesty," Esther replied, "come today with Haman to a banquet I have prepared."
|

|
|
|
▶ 그러자 에스테르가 말하였다. “임금님께서 좋으시다면, 제가 하만을 위하여 마련한 연회에 임금님께서 오늘 그와 함께 와 주셨으면 합니다.”
|

|
And the king ordered, "Have Haman make haste to fulfill the wish of Esther." So the king went with Haman to the banquet Esther had prepared.
|

|
▶ 이에 임금은 “에스테르의 말대로 할 터이니 하만을 곧바로 데려오너라.” 하고 분부를 내렸다. 이렇게 해서 임금과 하만은 에스테르가 마련한 연회에 참석하게 되었다.

During the drinking of the wine, the king said to Esther, "Whatever you ask for shall be granted, and whatever request you make shall be honored, even if it is for half my kingdom."

▶ 술을 마시면서 임금이 에스테르에게 말하였다. “그대의 소청이 무엇이오? 그대에게 그대로 이루어질 것이오. 그대의 소원이 무엇이오? 왕국의 반이라도 그대에게 주겠소.”
