다윗이 마음속으로 생각하였다. ‘내가 이러다가 언젠가는 사울의 손에 망할 것이다. 그러니 필리스티아인들의 땅으로 가 목숨을 건지는 것보다 더 좋은 방법이 없다. 사울은 나를 이스라엘 영토 안에서만 찾다가 마침내 단념하고 말겠지. 그러면 나는 그 손에서 목숨을 건지게 될 것이다.’

▶ But David said to himself: "I shall perish some day at the hand of Saul. I have no choice but to escape to the land of the Philistines; then Saul will give up his continual search for me throughout the land of Israel, and I shall be out of his reach."

다윗은 일어나 자기를 따르는 부하 육백 명과 함께 갓 임금, 마옥의 아들 아키스에게 넘어갔다.

▶ Accordingly, David departed with his six hundred men and went over to Achish, son of Maoch, king of Gath.

이렇게 하여 다윗과 그 부하들은 저마다 가족을 데리고, 갓에 있는 아키스와 더불어 살게 되었다. 다윗이 거느리고 간 두 아내는 이즈르엘 여자 아히노암과 나발의 아내였던 카르멜 여자 아비가일이었다.

▶ David and his men lived in Gath with Achish; each one had his family, and David had his two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel.

사울은 다윗이 갓으로 달아났다는 소식을 전해 듣고 다시는 그를 찾지 않았다.

▶ When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.

다윗이 아키스에게 청하였다. “제가 임금님 눈에 드신다면, 지방 성읍들 가운데 한 곳을 저에게 주시어 거기에서 살게 해 주십시오. 제가 어찌 왕도에서 임금님과 함께 살 수 있겠습니까?”

▶ David said to Achish: "If I meet with your approval, let me have a place to live in one of the country towns. Why should your servant live with you in the royal city?"

아키스는 그날로 치클락을 다윗에게 주었다. 그리하여 치클락이 오늘날까지 유다 임금들의 차지가 된 것이다.

▶ That same day Achish gave him Ziklag, which has, therefore, belonged to the kings of Judah up to the present time.

▶ In all, David lived a year and four months in the country of the Philistines.

|
다윗은 부하들을 거느리고 올라가 그수르족과 게레즈족과 아말렉족을 습격하였다. 그들은 텔람에서 수르를 거쳐 이집트 땅에 이르는 지역의 주민들이었다.

▶ David and his men went up and made raids on the Geshurites, Girzites, and Amalekites-peoples living in the land between Telam, on the approach to Shur, and the land of Egypt.

|
다윗이 그 지역을 칠 때는 남자든 여자든 아무도 살려 두지 않았다. 그런 다음 양과 소와 나귀와 낙타와 옷가지들을 빼앗아 아키스에게 돌아오곤 하였다.

▶ In attacking the land David would not leave a man or woman alive, but would carry off sheep, oxen, asses, camels, and clothes. On his return he brought these to Achish,

아키스가 “오늘은 누구를 털었소?” 하고 물으면, 다윗은 “유다의 네겝입니다.” 하거나 “여라흐므엘족의 네겝입니다.” 또는 “카인족의 네겝입니다.” 하고 대답하곤 하였다.

▶ who asked, "Whom did you raid this time?" And David answered, "The Negeb of Judah," or "The Negeb of Jerahmeel," or "The Negeb of the Kenites."

다윗은 “저들이 우리를 두고 ‘다윗이 이러저러한 일을 하였다.’고 말하게 해서는 안 되겠다.” 하며, 남자든 여자든 모두 죽이고 아무도 갓으로 데려오지 않았다. 다윗은 필리스티아인들의 지방에 머물러 있는 동안 내내 이렇게 하였다.

▶ But David would not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, fearing that they would betray him by saying, "This is what David did." This was his custom as long as he lived in the country of the Philistines.

그러나 아키스는 “다윗이 제 백성 이스라엘에게 미움을 사서 이제는 영영 내 종이 되겠구나.” 하며 다윗을 믿었다.

▶ And Achish trusted David, thinking, "He must certainly be detested by his people Israel. I shall have him as my vassal forever."
