The LORD said to Moses,

"Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."

▶ “사람들을 보내어, 내가 이스라엘 자손들에게 주는 가나안 땅을 정찰하게 하여라. 각 지파에서 모두 수장을 한 사람씩 보내야 한다.”

So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.

In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,

and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?

▶ 그 땅이 어떠한지 살펴보고, 그곳에 사는 백성이 강한지 약한지, 적은지 많은지,

Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?

▶ 그들이 사는 땅이 좋은지 나쁜지, 그들이 사는 마을들이 천막으로 되어 있는지 요새로 되어 있는지,

Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.

▶ 그 땅이 기름진지 메마른지, 그곳에 나무가 있는지 없는지 살펴보아라. 용기를 내어라. 그리고 그 땅의 과일을 가져오너라.” 그때는 첫 포도가 익는 철이었다.

So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.

Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

▶ 그들은 네겝으로 올라가 헤브론에 이르렀다. 거기에는 아낙의 후손인 아히만, 세사이, 탈마이가 살고 있었다. 헤브론은 이집트의 초안보다 칠 년 먼저 세워졌다.

They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.

|
▶ 그들은 에스콜 골짜기에 이르러, 포도송이 하나가 달린 가지를 잘라, 두 사람이 막대기에 꿰어 둘러메었다. 석류와 무화과도 땄다.

It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.

After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,

|
|

met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.

|

They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.

However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.
|

▶ 그러나 그 땅에 사는 백성은 힘세고, 성읍들은 거창한 성채로 되어 있습니다. 더군다나 우리는 그곳에서 아낙의 후손들도 보았습니다.

Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."

Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."

But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."

So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,

veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."

▶ 우리는 또 그곳에서 나필족을 보았다. 아낙의 자손들은 바로 이 나필족에서 나온 것이다. 우리 눈에도 우리 자신이 메뚜기 같았지만, 그들의 눈에도 그랬을 것이다.”
