At this, the whole community broke out with loud cries, and even in the night the people wailed.

|
All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, the whole community saying to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that here in the desert we were dead!

▶ 이스라엘의 모든 자손이 모세와 아론에게 투덜거렸다. 온 공동체가 그들에게 말하였다. “우리가 차라리 이집트 땅에서 죽었더라면! 아니면 이 광야에서라도 죽어 버렸으면!

|
Why is the LORD bringing us into this land only to have us fall by the sword? Our wives and little ones will be taken as booty. Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"

|
▶ 주님께서는 어쩌자고 우리를 이 땅으로 데려오셔서, 우리는 칼에 맞아 쓰러지고, 우리 아내와 어린것들은 노획물이 되게 하시는가? 차라리 이집트로 돌아가는 것이 더 낫지 않겠나?”

So they said to one another, "Let us appoint a leader and go back to Egypt."

▶ 그러면서 서로 “우두머리를 하나 세워 이집트로 돌아가자.” 하고 말하였다.

|
But Moses and Aaron fell prostrate before the whole assembled community of the Israelites;

▶ 모세와 아론은 이스라엘 자손들의 온 공동체의 회중 앞에서 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드렸다.

|
while Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, who had been in the party that scouted the land, tore their garments
|

|
|
▶ 그러자 그 땅을 정찰하고 돌아온 이들 가운데 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여푼네의 아들 칼렙이 자기들의 옷을 찢고 나서,

and said to the whole community of the Israelites, "The country which we went through and explored is a fine, rich land.
|

▶ 이스라엘 자손들의 온 공동체에게 말하였다. “우리가 가로지르며 정찰한 저 땅은 정말 무척이나 좋은 땅입니다.

|
If the LORD is pleased with us, he will bring us in and give us that land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
|

|
|
▶ 우리가 주님 마음에 들기만 하면, 그분께서는 우리를 저 땅으로 데려가셔서 그곳을 우리에게 주실 것입니다. 그곳은 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅입니다.

But do not rebel against the LORD! You need not be afraid of the people of that land; they are but food for us! Their defense has left them, but the LORD is with us. Therefore, do not be afraid of them."

▶ 다만 여러분은 주님을 거역하지만 마십시오. 그리고 여러분은 저 땅의 백성을 두려워하지 마십시오. 그들은 이제 우리의 밥입니다. 그들을 덮어 주던 그늘은 이미 걷혀 버렸습니다. 주님께서 우리와 함께 계십니다. 그들을 두려워하지 마십시오.”

In answer, the whole community threatened to stone them. But then the glory of the LORD appeared at the meeting tent to all the Israelites.

▶ 그러자 온 공동체가 돌을 던져 그들을 죽이자고 말해 댔다. 그때 주님의 영광이 만남의 천막에서 이스라엘의 모든 자손에게 나타났다.

And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people spurn me? How long will they refuse to believe in me, despite all the signs I have performed among them?
|

▶ 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “이 백성은 언제까지 나를 업신여길 것인가? 내가 그들 가운데에서 일으킨 그 모든 표징을 보고도, 이자들은 언제까지 나를 믿지 않을 것인가?

I will strike them with pestilence and wipe them out. Then I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."

▶ 내가 이제 이들을 흑사병으로 치고 쫓아내 버린 다음, 너를 이들보다 더 크고 강한 민족으로 만들겠다.”

But Moses said to the LORD: "Are the Egyptians to hear of this? For by your power you brought out this people from among them.
|

▶ 모세가 주님께 아뢰었다. “당신께서 이 백성을 당신의 힘으로 이집트 한가운데에서 데리고 올라오셨는데, 이집트인들이 이 일을 듣게 되면,

And are they to tell of it to the inhabitants of this land? It has been heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people; you, LORD, who plainly reveal yourself! Your cloud stands over them, and you go before them by day in a column of cloud and by night in a column of fire.

▶ 그들은 그것을 저 땅의 주민들에게 말할 것입니다. 주님, 당신께서 이 백성 한가운데에 계시다는 말을 그들은 들었습니다. 그리고 주님, 당신께서는 눈과 눈을 마주하여 이 백성에게 나타나 보여 주시고, 당신의 구름이 그들 위에 머무르며, 낮에는 구름 기둥 속에서, 밤에는 불기둥 속에서 몸소 그들 앞에 서서 가신다는 말을 그들은 들었습니다.

If now you slay this whole people, the nations who have heard such reports of you will say,

'The LORD was not able to bring this people into the land he swore to give them; that is why he slaughtered them in the desert.'

Now then, let the power of my Lord be displayed in its greatness, even as you have said,

'The LORD is slow to anger and rich in kindness, forgiving wickedness and crime; yet not declaring the guilty guiltless, but punishing children to the third and fourth generation for their fathers' wickedness.'

Pardon, then, the wickedness of this people in keeping with your great kindness, even as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now."

The LORD answered: "I pardon them as you have asked.

Yet, by my life and the LORD'S glory that fills the whole earth,

of all the men who have seen my glory and the signs I worked in Egypt and in the desert, and who nevertheless have put me to the test ten times already and have failed to heed my voice,

not one shall see the land which I promised on oath to their fathers. None of these who have spurned me shall see it.

But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me unreservedly, I will bring him into the land where he has just been, and his descendants shall possess it.

But now, since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn away tomorrow and set out in the desert on the Red Sea road."

The LORD also said to Moses and Aaron:

"How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the Israelites against me.

Tell them: By my life, says the LORD, I will do to you just what I have heard you say.
|

▶ 그들에게 이렇게 말하여라. ‘주님의 말이다. 내가 살아 있는 한, 너희가 내 귀에 대고 한 말에 따라, 내가 반드시 너희에게 그대로 해 주겠다.

Here in the desert shall your dead bodies fall. Of all your men of twenty years or more, registered in the census, who grumbled against me,

not one shall enter the land where I solemnly swore to settle you, except Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun.

Your little ones, however, who you said would be taken as booty, I will bring in, and they shall appreciate the land you spurned.

But as for you, your bodies shall fall here in the desert,

|
here where your children must wander for forty years, suffering for your faithlessness, till the last of you lies dead in the desert.

▶ 그리고 너희의 자식들은, 너희가 모두 주검으로 이 광야에 누울 때까지, 너희가 배신한 값을 지고 사십 년 동안 광야에서 양을 칠 것이다.

Forty days you spent in scouting the land; forty years shall you suffer for your crimes: one year for each day. Thus you will realize what it means to oppose me.

I, the LORD, have sworn to do this to all this wicked community that conspired against me: here in the desert they shall die to the last man."

|
And so it happened to the men whom Moses had sent to reconnoiter the land and who on returning had set the whole community grumbling against him by spreading discouraging reports about the land;

these men who had given out the bad report about the land were struck down by the LORD and died.
|

|
Of all the men who had gone to reconnoiter the land, only Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, survived.
|

When Moses repeated these words to all the Israelites, the people felt great remorse.

|
Early the next morning they started up into the foothills, saying, "Here we are, ready to go up to the place that the LORD spoke of: for we were indeed doing wrong."

▶ 다음 날 그들은 아침 일찍 일어나, “자, 우리가 잘못하였으니, 주님께서 말씀하신 그곳으로 올라가자.” 하면서, 산악 지방의 고지대로 올라갔다.

But Moses said, "Why are you again disobeying the LORD'S orders? This cannot succeed.

Do not go up, because the LORD is not in your midst; if you go, you will be beaten down before your enemies.

|
For there the Amalekites and Canaanites face you, and you will fall by the sword. You have turned back from following the LORD; therefore the LORD will not be with you."

Yet they dared to go up into the foothills, even though neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses left the camp.

And the Amalekites and Canaanites who dwelt in that hill country came down and defeated them, beating them back as far as Hormah.
