and said to him, 'Go forth from your land and from your kinsfolk to the land that I will show you.'

▶ ‘네 고향과 친족을 떠나 내가 너에게 보여 줄 땅으로 가거라.’ 하고 이르셨습니다.

|
So he went forth from the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. And from there, after his father died, he made him migrate to this land where you now dwell.
|

▶ 그리하여 그는 칼데아인들의 땅을 떠나 하란에 자리를 잡았습니다. 그리고 그의 아버지가 죽은 뒤, 하느님께서는 그를 하란에서 지금 여러분이 살고 있는 이 땅으로 옮겨 오게 하셨습니다.

Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but he did promise to give it to him and his descendants as a possession, even though he was childless.

▶ 그때에 하느님께서는 아브라함에게 이곳에서는 한 치의 땅도 상속 재산으로 주지 않으셨습니다. 다만 그가 아직 자식이 없는데도, 그와 그 뒤에 오는 후손들에게 이 땅을 소유로 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.

And God spoke thus, 'His descendants shall be aliens in a land not their own, where they shall be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years;

|
▶ 하느님께서는 또 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘그의 후손은 남의 나라에서 나그네살이하며 사백 년 동안 종살이를 하고 학대를 받을 것이다.

but I will bring judgment on the nation they serve,' God said, 'and after that they will come out and worship me in this place.'

▶ 그러나 그의 후손들이 종이 되어 섬길 민족을 나는 심판하겠다.’ 하느님께서 또 이르셨습니다. ‘그 뒤에 그들은 빠져나와 이곳에서 나를 섬길 것이다.’

Then he gave him the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, as Isaac did Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.

"And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into slavery in Egypt; but God was with him

▶ 그런데 이 선조들은 요셉을 시기한 나머지 이집트에 팔아넘겨 버렸습니다. 그러나 하느님께서는 그와 함께 계시면서,

and rescued him from all his afflictions. He granted him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, who put him in charge of Egypt and of his entire household.

▶ 모든 재난에서 그를 구하시고 이집트 임금 파라오 앞에서 그에게 은총과 지혜를 베푸셨습니다. 그리하여 파라오는 그에게 이집트와 자기의 온 집안을 다스리게 하였습니다.

Then a famine and great affliction struck all Egypt and Canaan, and our ancestors could find no food;
|

|
▶ 그때에 온 이집트와 가나안에 기근이 닥쳐 재난이 극심하였는데, 우리 조상들도 양식을 얻지 못하였습니다.

but when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our ancestors there a first time.
|

▶ 야곱은 이집트에 곡식이 있다는 말을 듣고 우리 조상들을 처음으로 그리 보냈습니다.

|
The second time, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh.

|
|
▶ 그리고 두 번째로 보냈을 때에 요셉은 형제들에게 자기가 누구인지 밝혔습니다. 그리하여 파라오도 요셉의 가족들을 알게 되었습니다.

Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob, inviting him and his whole clan, seventy-five persons;
|

▶ 요셉은 사람을 보내어 아버지 야곱과 일흔다섯 명이나 되는 자기 친족을 모두 불러오게 하였습니다.

and Jacob went down to Egypt. And he and our ancestors died
|

|
|
|
▶ 그래서 야곱이 이집트로 내려갔습니다. 그곳에서 야곱도 죽고 우리 조상들도 죽었습니다.

and were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor at Shechem.

"When the time drew near for the fulfillment of the promise that God pledged to Abraham, the people had increased and become very numerous in Egypt,

until another king who knew nothing of Joseph came to power in Egypt.

He dealt shrewdly with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to expose their infants, that they might not survive.

|
▶ 그자는 우리 겨레에게 간계를 부리고 우리 조상들을 학대하여, 갓난아기들을 버리게 하고 하나도 살아남지 못하게 하였습니다.

At this time Moses was born, and he was extremely beautiful. For three months he was nursed in his father's house;

but when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.

Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in his words and deeds.

"When he was forty years old, he decided to visit his kinsfolk, the Israelites.
|

▶ 마흔 살이 다 되었을 때, 그의 마음에 자기 동족 이스라엘 자손들을 찾아볼 생각이 떠올랐습니다.

When he saw one of them treated unjustly, he defended and avenged the oppressed man by striking down the Egyptian.

▶ 어느 날 그는 자기 동족 가운데 한 사람이 부당한 일을 겪는 것을 보고 이집트 사람을 쳐 죽여, 학대받은 그 사람을 도와주고 그를 위하여 앙갚음을 해 주었습니다.

He assumed his kinsfolk would understand that God was offering them deliverance through him, but they did not understand.
|

|
▶ 그는 하느님께서 자기 손을 통하여 동족들에게 구원을 베푸신다는 것을 동족들이 깨달을 줄로 생각하였지만, 그들은 깨닫지 못하였습니다.

The next day he appeared to them as they were fighting and tried to reconcile them peacefully, saying, 'Men, you are brothers. Why are you harming one another?'

|
|
|
▶ 이튿날 모세는 서로 싸우고 있는 동족들에게 나타나 그들을 평화롭게 화해시키려고, ‘여보시오, 당신들은 한 형제라오. 그런데 왜 서로들 해를 끼치는 것이오?’ 하고 말하였습니다.

Then the one who was harming his neighbor pushed him aside, saying, 'Who appointed you ruler and judge over us?
|

|
|
|
▶ 그러자 동료에게 해를 입히던 자가 모세를 떼밀며 대꾸하였습니다. ‘누가 당신을 우리의 지도자와 판관으로 세우기라도 했소?

Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'

Moses fled when he heard this and settled as an alien in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
|

"Forty years later, an angel appeared to him in the desert near Mount Sinai in the flame of a burning bush.

When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look at it, the voice of the Lord came,

▶ 그것을 본 모세는 그 광경에 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그래서 자세히 보려고 가까이 가는데 주님의 목소리가 들렸습니다.

'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob.' Then Moses, trembling, did not dare to look at it.

▶ ‘나는 네 조상들의 하느님, 곧 아브라함과 이사악과 야곱의 하느님이다.’ 모세는 몸이 떨려 자세히 볼 엄두도 내지 못하였습니다.

But the Lord said to him, 'Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.
|

|
|
|
▶ 그때에 주님께서 모세에게 이르셨습니다. ‘네가 서 있는 곳은 거룩한 땅이니 네 발에서 신을 벗어라.

|
I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Come now, I will send you to Egypt.'

|
▶ 나는 이집트에 있는 내 백성의 고난을 똑똑히 보았고 그들의 신음 소리도 들었다. 그래서 나는 그들을 구해 내려고 내려왔다. 이제 가거라. 내가 너를 이집트로 보낸다.’

This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, 'Who appointed you ruler and judge?' God sent as (both) ruler and deliverer, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

▶ 이 모세를, ‘누가 당신을 지도자와 판관으로 세우기라도 했소?’ 하며 사람들이 배척한 이 사람을, 하느님께서는 떨기나무에 나타난 그 천사를 시켜 지도자와 해방자로 보내셨습니다.

This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the desert for forty years.

It was this Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you, from among your own kinsfolk, a prophet like me.'

It was he who, in the assembly in the desert, was with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai and with our ancestors, and he received living utterances to hand on to us.

▶ 이 사람은 광야의 집회 때, 시나이 산에서 자기에게 말하는 천사와 우리 조상들 사이에 중개자가 되어, 살아 있는 말씀을 받아 우리에게 전해 주었습니다.

"Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him; instead, they pushed him aside and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,

saying to Aaron, 'Make us gods who will be our leaders. As for that Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.'

▶ 그러면서 아론에게 말하였습니다. ‘앞장서서 우리를 이끄실 신들을 만들어 주십시오. 우리를 이집트 땅에서 데리고 나온 저 모세는 어떻게 되었는지 모르겠습니다.’

So they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifice to the idol, and reveled in the works of their hands.

Then God turned and handed them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: 'Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings for forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?

No, you took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship. So I shall take you into exile beyond Babylon.'

"Our ancestors had the tent of testimony in the desert just as the One who spoke to Moses directed him to make it according to the pattern he had seen.
|

▶ 우리 조상들은 광야에 있을 때에 증언의 천막을 가지고 있었습니다. 모세에게 말씀하신 분께서 지시하신 대로, 자기가 본 모형에 따라 모세가 만든 것입니다.

Our ancestors who inherited it brought it with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out from before our ancestors, up to the time of David,

who found favor in the sight of God and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the house of Jacob.

But Solomon built a house for him.
|

Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says:

Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.

You received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it."

But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,

and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."

But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together.

They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.

As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."

▶ 사람들이 돌을 던질 때에 스테파노는, “주 예수님, 제 영을 받아 주십시오.” 하고 기도하였다.

Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them"; and when he said this, he fell asleep.

▶ 그리고 무릎을 꿇고 큰 소리로, “주님, 이 죄를 저 사람들에게 돌리지 마십시오.” 하고 외쳤다. 스테파노는 이 말을 하고 잠들었다.
