From the desert of Sin the whole Israelite community journeyed by stages, as the LORD directed, and encamped at Rephidim. Here there was no water for the people to drink.

▶ 이스라엘 자손들의 온 공동체는 주님의 분부대로 신 광야를 떠나 차츰차츰 자리를 옮겨 갔다. 그들은 르피딤에 진을 쳤는데, 백성이 마실 물이 없었다.

They quarreled, therefore, with Moses and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses replied, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the LORD to a test?"

▶ 백성은 “우리가 마실 물을 내놓으시오.” 하면서 모세와 시비하였다. 그러자 모세가 말하였다. “어째서 나와 시비하려 하느냐? 어째서 주님을 시험하느냐?”

Here, then, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? Was it just to have us die here of thirst with our children and our livestock?"

▶ 그러나 백성은 그곳에서 목이 말라, 모세에게 불평하며 말하였다. “어쩌자고 우리를 이집트에서 데리고 올라왔소? 우리와 우리 자식들과 가축들을 목말라 죽게 하려고 그랬소?”

So Moses cried out to the LORD, "What shall I do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!"

▶ 모세가 주님께 부르짖었다. “이 백성에게 제가 무엇을 해야 합니까? 이제 조금만 있으면 저에게 돌을 던질 것 같습니다.”

The LORD answered Moses, "Go over there in front of the people, along with some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which you struck the river.

▶ 그러자 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “이스라엘의 원로들 가운데 몇 사람을 데리고 백성보다 앞서 나아가거라. 나일 강을 친 너의 지팡이를 손에 잡고 가거라.

I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink." This Moses did, in the presence of the elders of Israel.

▶ 이제 내가 저기 호렙의 바위 위에서 네 앞에 서 있겠다. 네가 그 바위를 치면 그곳에서 물이 터져 나와, 백성이 그것을 마시게 될 것이다.” 모세는 이스라엘의 원로들이 보는 앞에서 그대로 하였다.

The place was called Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled there and tested the LORD, saying, "Is the LORD in our midst or not?"

▶ 그는 이스라엘 자손들이 시비하였다 해서, 그리고 그들이 “주님께서 우리 가운데에 계시는가, 계시지 않는가?” 하면서 주님을 시험하였다 해서, 그곳의 이름을 마싸와 므리바라 하였다.

Battle with Amalek

At Rephidim, Amalek came and waged war against Israel.

▶ 그때 아말렉족이 몰려와 르피딤에서 이스라엘과 싸움을 벌였다.

|
Moses, therefore, said to Joshua, "Pick out certain men, and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle. I will be standing on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand."
|

▶ 그러자 모세가 여호수아에게 말하였다. “너는 우리를 위하여 장정들을 뽑아 아말렉과 싸우러 나가거라. 내일 내가 하느님의 지팡이를 손에 잡고 언덕 꼭대기에 서 있겠다.”

So Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek in battle after Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur.

▶ 여호수아는 모세가 말한 대로 아말렉과 싸우고, 모세와 아론과 후르는 언덕으로 올라갔다.

|
As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight.

▶ 모세가 손을 들면 이스라엘이 우세하고, 손을 내리면 아말렉이 우세하였다.

Moses' hands, however, grew tired; so they put a rock in place for him to sit on. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady till sunset.

▶ 모세의 손이 무거워지자, 그들은 돌을 가져다 그의 발 아래 놓고 그를 그 위에 앉혔다. 그런 다음 아론과 후르가 한 사람은 이쪽에서, 다른 사람은 저쪽에서 모세의 두 손을 받쳐 주니, 그의 손이 해가 질 때까지 처지지 않았다.

And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

▶ 그리하여 여호수아는 아말렉과 그의 백성을 칼로 무찔렀다.

|
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this down in a document as something to be remembered, and recite it in the ears of Joshua: I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens."

▶ 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “이 일을 기념하여 책에 기록해 두어라. 그리고 내가 아말렉에 대한 기억을 하늘 아래에서 완전히 없애 버리겠다는 것을 여호수아에게 똑똑히 일러 주어라.”

Moses also built an altar there, which he called Yahweh-nissi;

for he said, "The LORD takes in hand his banner; the LORD will war against Amalek through the centuries."

▶ 이렇게 말하였다. “손 하나가 주님의 어좌를 거슬러 들리리니, 주님과 아말렉 사이에 대대로 전쟁이 일어날 것이다.”
