옹기장이가 부드러운 흙을 열심히 개어 우리에게 쓸모 있는 갖가지 그릇을 빚습니다. 같은 진흙을 가지고 깨끗한 일에 쓰일 기물도 반대되는 일에 쓰일 것도 다 같은 방식으로 빚어냅니다. 그러나 어느 것이 어디에 쓰일지는 도공이 결정합니다.

그런가 하면 부질없는 수고를 하며 같은 진흙으로 헛된 신을 빚기도 합니다. 그러나 그 도공 자신도 얼마 전에 흙에서 온 자로서 빌린 제 영혼을 머지않아 돌려주어야 할 때가 되면 자기가 나온 그 흙으로 가야 합니다.
