and Samuel spoke to all Israel. At that time, the Philistines gathered for an attack on Israel. Israel went out to engage them in battle and camped at Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek.

▶ 그리하여 사무엘의 말은 그대로 온 이스라엘에 전해졌다. 이스라엘은 필리스티아인들과 싸우러 나가 에벤 에제르에 진을 치고, 필리스티아인들은 아펙에 진을 쳤다.

The Philistines then drew up in battle formation against Israel. After a fierce struggle Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who slew about four thousand men on the battlefield.

▶ 필리스티아인들은 전열을 갖추고 이스라엘에게 맞섰다. 싸움이 커지면서 이스라엘은 필리스티아인들에게 패배하였다. 필리스티아인들은 벌판의 전선에서 이스라엘 군사를 사천 명가량이나 죽였다.

When the troops retired to the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD permitted us to be defeated today by the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the LORD from Shiloh that it may go into battle among us and save us from the grasp of our enemies."

▶ 군사들이 진영으로 돌아오자 이스라엘의 원로들이 말하였다. “주님께서 어찌하여 오늘 필리스티아인들 앞에서 우리를 치셨을까? 실로에서 주님의 계약 궤를 모셔 옵시다. 주님께서 우리 가운데에 오시어 원수들 손에서 우리를 구원하시도록 합시다.”

So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned upon the cherubim. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were with the ark of God.

▶ 그리하여 백성은 실로에 사람들을 보내어, 거기에서 커룹들 위에 좌정하신 만군의 주님의 계약 궤를 모셔 왔다. 엘리의 두 아들 호프니와 피느하스도 하느님의 계약 궤와 함께 왔다.

When the ark of the LORD arrived in the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth resounded.
|

|
▶ 주님의 계약 궤가 진영에 도착하자, 온 이스라엘은 땅이 뒤흔들리도록 큰 함성을 올렸다.

The Philistines, hearing the noise of shouting, asked, "What can this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" On learning that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp,

▶ 필리스티아인들이 이 큰 함성을 듣고, “히브리인들의 진영에서 저런 함성이 들리다니 무슨 까닭일까?” 하고 묻다가, 주님의 궤가 진영에 도착하였다는 사실을 알게 되었다.

the Philistines were frightened. They said, "Gods have come to their camp." They said also, "Woe to us! This has never happened before.

Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with various plagues and with pestilence.

▶ 우리는 망했다! 누가 저 강력한 신의 손에서 우리를 구원하겠는가? 저 신은 광야에서 갖가지 재앙으로 이집트인들을 친 신이 아니냐!

Take courage and be manly, Philistines; otherwise you will become slaves to the Hebrews, as they were your slaves. So fight manfully!"

The Philistines fought and Israel was defeated; every man fled to his own tent. It was a disastrous defeat, in which Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers.

The ark of God was captured, and Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were among the dead.

A Benjaminite fled from the battlefield and reached Shiloh that same day, with his clothes torn and his head covered with dirt.

When he arrived, Eli was sitting in his chair beside the gate, watching the road, for he was troubled at heart about the ark of God. The man, however, went into the city to divulge his news, which put the whole city in an uproar.

Hearing the outcry of the men standing near him, Eli inquired, "What does this commotion mean?"

(Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes would not focus, so that he could not see.)

▶ 엘리는 아흔여덟 살이나 되었고 눈이 굳어져 앞을 볼 수가 없었다.

The man quickly came up to Eli and said, "It is I who have come from the battlefield; I fled from there today." He asked, "What happened, my son?"

▶ 그 사람이 엘리에게 “제가 바로 싸움터에서 온 사람입니다. 오늘 제가 싸움터에서 도망쳐 나왔습니다.” 하자, 엘리는 “내 아들아, 그래, 그곳 사정이 어떠냐?” 하고 물었다.

|
And the messenger answered: "Israel fled from the Philistines; in fact, the troops suffered heavy losses. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are among the dead, and the ark of God has been captured."

▶ 전령이 대답하였다. “이스라엘은 필리스티아인들 앞에서 도망쳤고, 군사들이 대학살을 당하였습니다. 사제님의 두 아들 호프니와 피느하스도 죽고, 하느님의 궤도 빼앗겼습니다.”

At this mention of the ark of God, Eli fell backward from his chair into the gateway; since he was an old man and heavy, he died of a broken neck. He had judged Israel for forty years.

▶ 전령이 하느님의 궤를 언급하자, 엘리가 대문 옆 의자에서 뒤로 넘어지더니 목이 부러져 죽었다. 그 사람은 늙은 데다 몸까지 무거웠던 것이다. 엘리는 마흔 해 동안 이스라엘의 판관으로 일하였다.

His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and at the point of giving birth. When she heard the news concerning the capture of the ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she was seized with the pangs of labor, and gave birth.

▶ 엘리의 며느리, 피느하스의 아내는 임신 중이었는데, 아이 낳을 때가 다 되었다. 그 여인은 하느님의 궤를 빼앗기고 시아버지와 남편마저 죽었다는 소식을 듣고는, 몸을 웅크린 채 아이를 낳았다. 갑자기 진통이 닥쳤던 것이다.

She was about to die when the women standing around her said to her, "Never fear! You have given birth to a son." Yet she neither answered nor paid any attention.

(She named the child Ichabod, saying, "Gone is the glory from Israel," with reference to the capture of the ark of God and to her father-in-law and her husband.)

She said, "Gone is the glory from Israel," because the ark of God had been captured.
