▶ And if riches be a desirable possession in life, what is more rich than Wisdom, who produces all things?

예지가 능력이 있다면 만물을 지어 낸 장인인 지혜보다 더 큰 능력을 가진 것이 어디 있겠는가?

▶ And if prudence renders service, who in the world is a better craftsman than she?

누가 의로움을 사랑하는가? 지혜의 노고에 덕이 따른다. 정녕 지혜는 절제와 예지를, 정의와 용기를 가르쳐 준다. 사람이 사는 데에 지혜보다 유익한 것은 없다.

▶ Or if one loves justice, the fruits of her works are virtues; For she teaches moderation and prudence, justice and fortitude, and nothing in life is more useful for men than these.

누가 폭넓은 경험을 원하는가? 지혜는 과거를 알고 미래를 예측하며 명언을 지어 내고 수수께끼를 풀 줄 알며 표징과 기적을, 시간과 시대의 변천을 미리 안다.

▶ Or again, if one yearns for copious learning, she knows the things of old, and infers those yet to come. She understands the turns of phrases and the solutions of riddles; signs and wonders she knows in advance and the outcome of times and ages.

그래서 나는 지혜를 맞아들여 함께 살기로 작정하였다. 지혜가 나에게 좋은 조언자가 되고 근심스럽고 슬플 때에는 격려가 됨을 알았기 때문이다.

▶ They would abide my silence and attend my utterance; and as I spoke on further, they would place their hands upon their mouths.

▶ terrible princes, hearing of me, would be afraid; in the assembly I should appear noble, and in war courageous.

또 집에 들어가면 지혜와 함께 편히 쉬리니 그와 함께 지내는 데에 마음 쓰라릴 일이 없고 그와 같이 사는 데에 괴로울 일이 없으며 기쁨과 즐거움만 있기 때문이다.

나는 이러한 사실을 혼자 생각하고 마음속으로 숙고한 끝에 지혜와 맺는 가족 관계에 불사가 있고

▶ Thinking thus within myself, and reflecting in my heart That there is immortality in kinship with Wisdom,

그와 맺는 우정에 온전한 환희가, 그가 손수 하는 일에 한량없이 많은 재산이, 그와 함께 쌓는 정분에 예지가, 그와 나누는 대화에 명성이 있음을 알고 어떻게 하면 지혜를 집으로 맞아들일 수 있을까 하고 돌아다녔다.

▶ and good pleasure in her friendship, and unfailing riches in the works of her hands, And that in frequenting her society there is prudence, and fair renown in sharing her discourses, I went about seeking to take her for my own.

그러나 지혜는 하느님께서 주지 않으시면 달리 얻을 수 없음을 깨달았다. 지혜가 누구의 선물인지 아는 것부터가 예지의 덕분이다. 그래서 나는 주님께 호소하고 간청하며 마음을 다하여 아뢰었다.
