In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:

▶ 유다 임금 요시야의 아들 여호야킴 제사년에, 주님께서 예레미야에게 이런 말씀을 내리셨다.

|
Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you against Israel, Judah, and all the nations, from the day I first spoke to you, in the days of Josiah, until today.
|

▶ “두루마리를 가져와 내가 너에게 이른 말을 모두 적어라. 그것은 그날부터, 곧 요시야 시절부터 오늘에 이르기까지, 이스라엘과 유다와 모든 민족들을 거슬러 내가 너에게 이른 말이다.

|
Perhaps, when the house of Judah hears all the evil I have in mind to do to them, they will turn back each from his evil way, so that I may forgive their wickedness and their sin.

▶ 행여 유다 집안이 내가 그들에게 온갖 재앙을 내리기로 하였다는 말을 듣고 저마다 제 악한 길에서 돌아서면, 나도 그들의 허물과 죄를 용서해 주겠다.”

So Jeremiah called Baruch, son of Neriah, who wrote down on a scroll, as Jeremiah dictated, all the words which the LORD had spoken to him.

▶ 그래서 예레미야는 네리야의 아들 바룩을 불렀고, 바룩은 주님께서 예레미야에게 이르신 모든 말씀을 예레미야가 불러 주는 대로 두루마리에 받아 적었다.

Then Jeremiah charged Baruch: I cannot go to the house of the LORD; I am prevented from doing so.
|

▶ 예레미야가 바룩에게 이렇게 지시하였다. “나는 묶여 있는 몸이어서 주님의 집에 들어갈 수 없다.
|

|
Do you go on the fast day and read publicly in the LORD'S house the LORD'S words from the scroll you wrote at my dictation; read them also to all the men of Judah who come up from their cities.

▶ 그러니 단식일에 네가 주님의 집에 들어가, 내가 불러 준 대로 받아 적은 두루마리에서 주님의 말씀을 백성에게 읽어 주어라. 또한 유다의 성읍들에서 온 모든 사람이 듣는 가운데 그 말씀을 읽어 주어라.

|
Perhaps they will lay their supplication before the LORD and will all turn back from their evil way; for great is the fury of anger with which the LORD has threatened this people.

▶ 행여 그들의 간청이 주님 앞에 올라가고, 그들이 저마다 제 악한 길에서 돌아설지도 모른다. 주님께서 이 백성을 거슬러 선포하신 분노와 진노가 너무 크기 때문이다.”

Baruch, son of Neriah, did everything the prophet Jeremiah commanded; from the book-scroll he read the LORD'S words in the LORD'S house.

▶ 네리야의 아들 바룩은 예레미야 예언자가 자신에게 명령한 모든 일을 그대로 이행하여, 주님의 집에서 주님의 말씀이 적힌 두루마리를 읽었다.

In the ninth month, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, a fast to placate the LORD was proclaimed for all the people of Jerusalem and all who came from Judah's cities to Jerusalem.

▶ 유다 임금 요시야의 아들 여호야킴 제오년 아홉째 달에, 예루살렘의 모든 백성과 유다 성읍들에서 예루살렘으로 올라온 모든 백성은 주님 앞에서 단식을 선언하였다.

It was in the room of Gemariah, son of the scribe Shaphan, in the upper court of the LORD'S house, at the entrance of the New Temple-Gate, that Baruch publicly read the words of Jeremiah from his book.

▶ 그때에 바룩이 주님의 집에서, 곧 주님의 집 ‘새 대문’ 어귀 위 뜰에 있는, 사판 서기관의 아들 그마르야의 방에서 예레미야의 말이 적힌 두루마리를 온 백성에게 읽어 주었다.

Now Micaiah, son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD read from the book.
|

▶ 사판의 손자이며 그마르야의 아들인 미카야가 두루마리에 적힌 주님의 말씀을 듣고 나서,

So he went down to the king's palace, into the scribe's chamber, where the princes were just then in session: Elishama, the scribe, Delaiah, son of Shemaiah, Elnathan, son of Achbor, Gemariah, son of Shaphan, Zedekiah, son of Hananiah, and the other princes.

▶ 왕궁의 서기관 방으로 내려가니, 거기에는 모든 대신이 있었다. 곧 엘리사마 서기관, 스마야의 아들 들라야, 악보르의 아들 엘나탄, 사판의 아들 그마르야, 하난야의 아들 치드키야를 비롯하여 모든 대신이 앉아 있었다.

To them Micaiah reported all that he had heard Baruch read publicly from his book.

▶ 미카야는 바룩이 백성에게 두루마리를 읽어 주어 자신도 듣게 된 모든 말씀을 그들에게 전해 주었다.

|
Thereupon the princes sent Jehudi, son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to Baruch with the order: "Come, and bring with you the scroll you read publicly to the people." Scroll in hand, Baruch, son of Neriah, went to them.

▶ 그러자 모든 대신은 쿠시의 증손이고 셀레므야의 손자이며 느탄야의 아들인 여후디를 바룩에게 보내어, “그대가 백성에게 읽어 준 두루마리를 손에 들고 오시오.” 하는 말을 전하였다. 네리야의 아들 바룩이 두루마리를 손에 들고 그들에게 오자,

"Sit down," they said to him," and read it to us." Baruch read it to them,

▶ 그들이 바룩에게 “거기 앉아 우리에게 그 두루마리를 읽어 주시오.” 하고 청하였다. 그래서 바룩은 그들에게 두루마리를 읽어 주었다.

and when they heard all its words, they were frightened and said to one another, "We must certainly tell the king all these things."

▶ 그들은 그 말씀을 다 듣고 나서, 놀라 서로 쳐다보다가 바룩에게 말하였다. “우리가 이 모든 말씀을 임금님께 보고해야겠소.”

Then they asked Baruch: "Tell us, please, how you came to write down all these words."
|

|
|
▶ 그러고 나서 그들은 바룩에게, “당신이 어떻게 이 모든 말씀을 그의 입에서 받아 적게 되었는지 우리에게 말해 주시오.” 하고 청하였다.

"Jeremiah dictated all these words to me," Baruch answered them," and I wrote them down with ink in the book."

▶ 바룩이 그들에게 대답하였다. “그분이 입으로 직접 내게 이 모든 말씀을 불러 주어, 먹으로 두루마리에 받아 적었습니다.”

At this the princes said to Baruch, "Go into hiding, you and Jeremiah; let no one know where you are."

▶ 그러자 대신들은 바룩에게 “예레미야와 함께 아무도 모르는 곳에 가서 숨으시오.” 하고 말하였다.

|
Leaving the scroll in safekeeping in the room of Elishama the scribe, they entered the room where the king was. When they told him everything that had happened,

▶ 그런 다음 그들은 두루마리를 엘리사마 서기관의 방에 놓아두고, 궁전 뜰에 있는 임금에게 나아가 이 모든 말씀을 들려주었다.

|
he sent Jehudi to fetch the scroll. Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama the scribe, and read it to the king and to all the princes who were in attendance on the king.

▶ 임금은 여후디를 보내어 그 두루마리를 가져오게 하였다. 여후디는 엘리사마 서기관의 방에서 두루마리를 가져와, 임금과 그 곁에 서 있는 모든 대신들에게 읽어 주었다.

Now the king was sitting in his winter house, since it was the ninth month, and fire was burning in a brazier before him.
|

|
|
▶ 마침 아홉째 달이어서 임금은 겨울 궁전에 머무르고 있었고, 그의 앞에는 화롯불이 타고 있었다.

|
Each time Jehudi finished reading three or four columns, the king would cut off the piece with a scribe's knife and cast it into the fire in the brazier, until the entire roll was consumed in the fire.

|
▶ 그런데 여후디가 서너 단을 읽을 때마다, 임금은 서기관의 칼로 그것을 베어 화롯불에 던졌다. 이렇게 하여 두루마리 전체가 화롯불 속에 들어갔다.

Hearing all these words did not frighten the king and his ministers or cause them to rend their garments.

▶ 임금과 신하들은 모두 이 말씀을 다 듣고 나서도, 두려워하거나 제 옷을 찢지 않았다.

|
And though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them,

▶ 엘나탄과 들라야와 그마르야가 임금에게 그 두루마리를 태우지 말라고 간청까지 하였지만, 임금은 그들의 말을 듣기는커녕,

|
but commanded Jerahmeel, a royal prince, and Seraiah, son of Azriel, and Shelemiah, son of Abdeel, to arrest Baruch, the secretary, and the prophet Jeremiah. But the LORD kept them concealed.

▶ 여라흐므엘 왕자와 아즈리엘의 아들 스라야와 압드엘의 아들 셀레므야에게 명령하여, 바룩 서기관과 예레미야 예언자를 잡아 오라고 하였다. 그러나 주님께서 그들을 숨겨 주셨다.

This word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after the king burned the scroll with the text Jeremiah had dictated to Baruch:

▶ 임금이 그 두루마리, 곧 바룩이 예레미야가 부르는 대로 받아적은 말씀을 태운 뒤, 주님의 말씀이 예레미야에게 내렸다.

|
Take another scroll, and write on it everything that the first scroll contained, which Jehoiakim, king of Judah, burned up.

▶ “다른 두루마리를 가져와, 유다 임금 여호야킴이 태워 버린 첫째 두루마리에 적혀 있던 먼젓번 말을 모두 거기에 다시 적어라.

|
And against Jehoiakim, king of Judah, say this: Thus says the LORD: You burned that scroll, saying, "Why did you write on it: Babylon's king shall surely come and lay waste this land and empty it of man and beast?"

|
|
|
▶ 그리고 너는 유다 임금 여호야킴에 관하여 말하여라. ‘주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ′너는, 어찌하여 바빌론 임금이 반드시 와서 이 땅을 파괴하고 사람과 짐승을 이 땅에서 없애 버릴 것이라는 말을 두루마리에 썼느냐고 하면서 그것을 태워 버렸다.′

|
The LORD now says of Jehoiakim, king of Judah: No descendant of his shall succeed to David's throne; his corpse shall be cast out, exposed to the heat of day, to the cold of night.

▶ 그러므로 주님께서 유다 임금 여호야킴을 두고 이렇게 말씀하신다. ′그의 후손 가운데 아무도 다윗 왕좌에 앉을 자가 없을 것이고, 그의 시체는 낮에는 더위에 밤에는 추위에 내던져질 것이다.

I will punish him and his descendants and his ministers for their wickedness; against them and the citizens of Jerusalem and the men of Judah I will fulfill all the threats of evil which went unheeded.

Jeremiah took another scroll, and gave it to his secretary, Baruch, son of Neriah; he wrote on it at Jeremiah's dictation all the words contained in the book which Jehoiakim, king of Judah, had burned in the fire, and many others of the same kind in addition.

▶ 그리하여 예레미야는 다른 두루마리를 가져와, 네리야의 아들 바룩 서기관에게 주었다. 바룩은 예레미야가 불러 주는 대로, 유다 임금 여호야킴이 불에 태워 버린 두루마리에 적혔던 말씀을 모두 거기에 받아 적었고, 비슷한 내용의 많은 말씀을 더 적어 넣었다.
