This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:

▶ 주님께서 예레미야에게 내리신 말씀.

|
Rise up, be off to the potter's house; there I will give you my message.
|

▶ “일어나 옹기장이 집으로 내려가거라. 거기에서 너에게 내 말을 들려주겠다.”
|

|
I went down to the potter's house and there he was, working at the wheel.
|

|
▶ 그래서 내가 옹기장이 집으로 내려갔더니, 옹기장이가 물레를 돌리며 일을 하고 있었다.
|

|
Whenever the object of clay which he was making turned out badly in his hand, he tried again, making of the clay another object of whatever sort he pleased.
|

▶ 옹기장이는 진흙을 손으로 빚어 옹기그릇을 만드는데, 옹기그릇에 흠집이 생기면 자기 눈에 드는 다른 그릇이 나올 때까지 계속해서 그 일을 되풀이하였다.

Then the word of the Lord came to me:

▶ 그때에 주님의 말씀이 나에게 내렸다.

|
Can I not do to you, house of Israel, as this potter has done? says the LORD. Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.

▶ “이스라엘 집안아, 주님의 말씀이다. 내가 이 옹기장이처럼 너희에게 할 수 없을 것 같으냐? 이스라엘 집안아, 옹기장이 손에 있는 진흙처럼 너희도 내 손에 있다.

Sometimes I threaten to uproot and tear down and destroy a nation or a kingdom.

▶ 나는 언제든지 어떤 민족이나 나라든 뽑고 허물고 없애 버리겠다고 선언할 수 있다.

|
But if that nation which I have threatened turns from its evil, I also repent of the evil which I threatened to do.
|

|
|
▶ 그러나 그 민족이 내가 이른 대로 죄악에서 돌아서면, 나는 마음을 바꾸어 그들에게 내리려고 하였던 재앙을 거두겠다.

Sometimes, again, I promise to build up and plant a nation or a kingdom.
|

▶ 나는 언제든지 어떤 민족이나 나라든 세우고 심겠다고 선언할 수 있다.

|
But if that nation does what is evil in my eyes, refusing to obey my voice, I repent of the good with which I promised to bless it.

▶ 그러나 그 민족이 내 말을 듣지 않고, 내 눈에 거슬리는 악한 짓을 저지르면 나도 마음을 바꾸어 그들에게 베풀고자 했던 복을 거두겠다.

And now, tell this to the men of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD: Take care! I am fashioning evil against you and making a plan. Return, each of you, from his evil way; reform your ways and your deeds.

▶ 그러니 이제 유다 사람들과 예루살렘 주민들에게 일러 주어라. ‘주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ′내가 너희에게 내릴 재앙을 마련하고 있고 너희를 칠 계획을 준비하고 있다. 그러니 제발 너희는 저마다 악한 길에서 돌아와 너희의 길과 행실을 고쳐라.′’

But they will say, "No use! We will follow our own devices; each one of us will behave according to the stubbornness of his evil heart!"

▶ 그러면 그들이 이렇게 대답할 것이다. ‘소용없는 일이오. 우리는 우리 생각대로 살아가겠소. 우리는 모두 고집스럽고 악한 마음대로 행동하겠소.’”

Does the snow of Lebanon desert the rocky heights? Do the gushing waters dry up that flow fresh down the mountains?

▶ 레바논의 눈이 시르욘 산의 바위에서 사라질 수가 있겠느냐? 그 시원한 물줄기가 마를 수가 있겠느냐?

Yet my people have forgotten me: they burn incense to a thing that does not exist. They stumble out of their ways, the paths of old, To travel on bypaths, not the beaten track.

▶ 그러나 내 백성은 나를 잊어버리고 거짓 신들에게 향을 피운다. 그들은 자기네 길에서, 예로부터 걸어온 길에서 비틀거리더니 닦이지도 않은 길, 샛길로 접어들었다.

Their land shall be turned into a desert, an object of lasting ridicule: All passers-by will be amazed, will shake their heads.

▶ 그들이 자기네 땅을 폐허로 만드니 그 땅은 영원히 놀림감이 되어 버렸다. 그곳을 지나는 사람마다 너무 놀라서 제 머리를 흔든다.

Like the east wind, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back, not my face, in their day of disaster.

Heed me, O LORD, and listen to what my adversaries say.

Must good be repaid with evil that they should dig a pit to take my life? Remember that I stood before you to speak in their behalf, to turn away your wrath from them.

▶ 선을 악으로 갚아도 됩니까? 그런데 그들은 제 목숨을 노리며 구덩이를 파 놓았습니다. 제가 당신 앞에 서서 그들을 위해 복을 빌어 주고 당신의 분노를 그들에게서 돌리려 했던 일을 기억하소서.

So now, deliver their children to famine, do away with them by the sword. Let their wives be made childless and widows; let their men die of pestilence, their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

▶ 그리하여 그들의 자녀들을 굶주리게 하시고 그들을 칼날에 부치소서. 그들의 아내들이 자녀도 없는 과부가 되고 그 남편들은 흑사병에 걸려 죽어 가며 젊은이들은 싸움터에서 칼에 맞아 죽게 하소서.

May cries be heard from their homes, when suddenly you send plunderers against them. For they have dug a pit to capture me, they have hid snares for my feet;

▶ 당신께서 갑자기 그들에게 약탈자를 보내실 때 그들 집 안에서 울부짖는 소리가 들리게 하소서. 그들이 저를 잡으려고 구덩이를 파 놓고 저의 발밑에 올가미를 숨겨 두었습니다.

But you, O LORD, know all their plans to slay me. Forgive not their crime, blot not out their sin in your sight! Let them go down before you, proceed against them in the time of your anger.

▶ 주님, 당신께서는 그들이 저를 죽이려는 흉계를 모두 아십니다. 그러니 그들의 죄악을 용서하지 마시고 그들의 죄를 당신 얼굴 앞에서 지우지 마소서. 그들을 당신 앞에서 거꾸러지게 하시고 당신 분노의 때에 그들을 마구 다루소서.
