Thus said the LORD: Go, buy a potter's earthen flask. Take along some of the elders of the people and of the priests,

and go out toward the Valley of Ben-hinnom, at the entrance of the Potsherd Gate; there proclaim the words which I will speak to you:

▶ ‘토기 문’ 곁에 있는 ‘벤 힌놈 골짜기’에 나가, 거기에서 내가 너에게 일러 줄 말을 선포하여라.

Listen to the word of the LORD, kings of Judah and citizens of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I am going to bring such evil upon this place that all who hear of it will feel their ears tingle.

▶ 너는 이렇게 말하여라. ‘유다 임금들과 예루살렘 주민들아, 주님의 말씀을 들어라. 만군의 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ′이제 내가 이곳에 재앙을 내리리니, 그 소식을 듣는 자마다 귀가 멍멍해질 것이다.

This is because they have forsaken me and alienated this place by burning in it incense to strange gods which neither they nor their fathers knew; and the kings of Judah have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.

▶ 그들이 나를 저버리고, 자신들이나 저희 조상들이나 유다 임금들도 모르는 다른 신들에게 향을 피우면서 이곳을 더럽히고, 이곳을 무죄한 이들의 피로 가득 채웠기 때문이다.

They have built high places for Baal to immolate their sons in fire as holocausts to Baal: such a thing as I neither commanded nor spoke of, nor did it ever enter my mind.

▶ 그들은 바알의 산당들을 세우고 저희 자식들을 불에 살라 바알에게 번제물로 바쳤는데, 이는 내가 명령한 적도 말한 적도 없으며, 내 마음에 떠오른 적도 없는 일이다.

Therefore, days will come, says the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth, or the Valley of Ben-hinnom, but rather, the Valley of Slaughter.

▶ 그러므로 이제 그날이 오고 있다. 주님의 말씀이다. 그때에는 이곳이 더 이상 토펫이나 벤 힌놈 골짜기가 아니라 살육의 골짜기라 불릴 것이다.

In this place I will foil the plan of Judah and Jerusalem; I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, by the hand of those that seek their lives. Their corpses I will give as food to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field.

▶ 나는 이곳에서 유다와 예루살렘의 계획을 물거품으로 만들겠다. 그들을 원수들 앞에서 칼에 맞아 쓰러지게 하고, 그들의 목숨을 노리는 자들 손에 죽게 하겠다. 또한 그들의 시체는 하늘의 새들과 땅의 짐승들에게 먹이로 내어 주겠다.

I will make this city an object of amazement and derision. Because of all its wounds, every passer-by will be amazed and will catch his breath.

▶ 나는 이 도성을 폐허와 놀림감으로 만들겠다. 그리하여 여기를 지나는 사람마다 그 모든 상처를 보고 몹시 놀라고 비웃을 것이다.

I will have them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters; they shall eat one another's flesh during the strict siege by which their enemies and those who seek their lives will confine them.

▶ 나는 그들이 제 아들딸들의 살을 먹게 하겠다. 그들은 원수들이 자신들을 포위한 채 목숨을 노리며 조여 오는 극심한 재난 가운데에서, 저마다 제 이웃의 살을 먹을 것이다.′’

|
And you shall break the flask in the sight of the men who went with you,

▶ 그때 너는 함께 간 사람들이 보는 앞에서 단지를 깨뜨려라.
|
|

|
and say to them: Thus says the LORD of hosts: Thus will I smash this people and this city, as one smashes a clay pot so that it cannot be repaired. And Topheth shall be a burial place, for lack of place to bury elsewhere.

▶ 그러고 나서 그들에게 말하여라. ‘만군의 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ′옹기장이가 다시는 주워 맞출 수 없게 질그릇을 깨 버리듯이, 내가 이 백성과 이 도성을 그렇게 부수겠다. 장사 지낼 곳이 없어 사람들은 결국 토펫에서 장사를 지내야 할 것이다.

Thus I will do to this place and to its inhabitants, says the LORD; I will make this city like Topheth.
|

▶ 이곳과 여기 사는 주민들을 이렇게 만들겠다. 주님의 말씀이다. 이 도성을 토펫처럼 만들어 놓겠다.

|
And the houses of Jerusalem and the palaces of the kings of Judah shall be defiled like the place of Topheth, all the houses upon whose roofs they burnt incense to the whole host of heaven and poured out libations to strange gods.
|

▶ 예루살렘의 집들과 유다 임금들의 궁궐도 토펫 터처럼 더럽혀질 것이다. 집집마다 지붕 위에서 사람들이 하늘의 모든 군대에게 향을 피우고 다른 신들에게 술을 따라 올린 탓이다.′’”

When Jeremiah returned from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy, he stood in the court of the house of God and said to all the people:

▶ 그 뒤 예레미야는 주님께서 그곳에서 예언하라고 파견하신 토펫에서 돌아와 주님의 집 앞뜰에 서서 온 백성에게 말하였다.

|
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I will surely bring upon this city all the evil with which I threatened it, because they have stiffened their necks and have not obeyed my words.

▶ “만군의 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ‘보라, 이제 내가 이 도성과 부근의 성읍마다 그 위에 이미 선포한 모든 재앙을 내리겠다. 그들이 내 말을 듣기를 마다하고 목을 뻣뻣하게 한 까닭이다.’”
