Son of man, propose a riddle, and speak this proverb to the house of Israel:

▶ “사람의 아들아, 이스라엘 집안에게 수수께끼를 내고 비유를 말하여라.
|

|
Thus speaks the Lord GOD: The great eagle, with great wings, with long pinions, with thick plumage, many-hued, came to Lebanon. He took the crest of the cedar,

▶ 너는 말하여라. ‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 큰 날개와 긴 깃이 달리고 울긋불긋한 깃털로 가득한 큰 독수리 한 마리가 레바논으로 갔다. 향백나무의 꼭대기 순을 따고

tearing off its topmost branch, And brought it to a land of tradesmen, set it in a city of merchants.

▶ 가장 높은 가지를 꺾어 상인들의 땅으로 가져가서 장사꾼들의 성읍에 심어 놓았다.

Then he took some seed of the land, and planted it in a seedbed; A shoot by plentiful waters, like a willow he placed it,

▶ 그 땅에서 난 씨앗을 가져다가 기름진 밭에 심었다. 큰 물 곁의 냇버들처럼, 버들잎사시나무처럼 심었다.

To sprout and grow up a vine, dense and low-lying, Its branches turned toward him, its roots lying under him. Thus it became a vine, produced branches and put forth shoots.

▶ 싹이 돋아 포도나무가 되어 낮게 옆으로 퍼졌다. 줄기는 독수리를 향하고 뿌리는 땅에 박혀 있었다. 이렇게 그것은 포도나무가 되어 가지를 뻗고 덩굴손을 내뻗었다.

But there was another great eagle, great of wing, rich in plumage; To him this vine bent its roots, sent out its branches, That he might water it more freely than the bed where it was planted.
|

|
▶ 그런데 큰 날개가 달리고 깃털이 많은 큰 독수리가 또 하나 있었다. 그러자, 포도나무가 뿌리를 그 독수리 쪽으로 돌리고 줄기를 그쪽으로 내뻗었다. 포도나무는 자기가 심긴 밭이 아니라 그 독수리에게서 물을 얻으려는 것이었다.

In a fertile field by plentiful waters it was planted, to grow branches, bear fruit, and become a majestic vine.

▶ 그 포도나무는 좋은 밭에, 큰 물 곁에 심어졌다. 햇가지를 뻗고 열매를 맺어 훌륭한 포도나무가 되라는 것이었다.’

Say: Thus says the Lord GOD: Can it prosper? Will he not rather tear it out by the roots and strip off its fruit, so that all its green growth will wither when he pulls it up by the roots? (No need of a mighty arm or many people to do this.)

▶ 너는 말하여라. ‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 그 포도나무가 잘되겠느냐? 독수리가 그 뿌리를 뽑고 그 열매를 훑어 말라 버리게 하지 않겠느냐? 그래서 새로 난 잎이 모두 말라 버리지 않겠느냐? 그 포도나무를 뿌리에서 떼어 들어내는 데에는 힘센 팔도 많은 군사도 필요하지 않다.

True, it is planted, but will it prosper? Will it not rather wither, when touched by the east wind, in the bed where it grew?

▶ 포도나무가 한 번 심어졌다고 잘되겠느냐? 샛바람이 휘몰아치면 바싹 말라 버리지 않느냐? 그것이 자라난 밭에서 말라 버리지 않느냐?’”

Thus the word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, say now to the rebellious house: Do you not understand what this means? It is this: The king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and took away its king and princes with him to Babylon.

▶ “이제 저 반항의 집안에게 ‘이것들이 무엇을 뜻하는지 모르겠느냐?’ 하고 물으며, 이렇게 말하여라. ‘자, 바빌론 임금이 예루살렘에 와서, 임금과 고관들을 잡아 바빌론으로 데려갔다.

Then he selected a man of the royal line with whom he made a covenant, binding him under oath, while removing the nobles of the land,

▶ 그는 또 왕실 후손 가운데 한 사람을 골라, 그와 계약을 맺고 맹세를 시킨 다음, 이 땅의 유력자들을 잡아갔다.

|
so that the kingdom would remain a modest one, without aspirations, and would keep his covenant and obey him.

|
▶ 그것은 이 왕국이 보잘것없이 되어 독립하지 못하고, 계약을 지켜야만 존속할 수 있게 하려는 것이었다.

|
But this man rebelled against him, sending envoys to Egypt to obtain horses and a great army. Can he prosper? Can he who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and still go free?

▶ 그러나 그는 바빌론 임금에게 반역하고 이집트로 사절들을 보내어, 군마와 많은 군사를 보내 달라고 요청하였다. 그런다고 성공할 것 같으냐? 그렇게 하는 자가 위험에서 벗어날 수 있겠느냐? 계약을 깨뜨리고서도 위험에서 벗어날 수 있겠느냐?

As I live, says the Lord GOD, in the home of the king who set him up to rule, whose oath he spurned, whose covenant with him he broke, there in Babylon I swear he shall die!

▶ 주 하느님의 말이다. 내가 살아 있는 한, 그는 자기를 왕위에 앉힌 임금이 있는 곳에서 죽을 것이다. 그는 그 임금이 시킨 맹세를 무시하고 그와 맺은 계약을 깨뜨렸다. 그는 그 임금 곁, 바빌론에서 죽을 것이다.

When ramps are cast up and siege towers are built for the destruction of many lives, he shall not be saved in the conflict by Pharaoh with a great army and numerous troops.

▶ 적군이 많은 사람을 죽이려고 공격 축대를 쌓고 공격 보루를 만들 때, 파라오가 강한 군대와 수많은 병사로 그를 전쟁에서 도와주지 않는다.

He spurned his oath, breaking his covenant. Though he gave his hand in pledge, he did all these things. He shall not escape!

▶ 그는 맹세를 무시하고 계약을 깨뜨렸다. 그가 손을 잡았다가 이런 짓들을 다 하였으니, 그는 위험에서 벗어날 수 없을 것이다.

Therefore say: Thus says the Lord GOD: As I live, my oath which he spurned, my covenant which he broke, I swear to bring down upon his head.

▶ 그러므로 주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 내가 살아 있는 한, 나는 그가 무시한 나의 맹세와 그가 깨뜨린 나의 계약을 그의 머리 위로 되갚겠다.

|
I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon and enter into judgment with him there over his breaking faith with me.

▶ 나는 그를 잡으려고 그물을 쳐 놓겠다. 내가 친 망에 걸리면, 나는 그를 바빌론으로 끌고 가서, 그가 나에게 저지른 배신을 그곳에서 심판하겠다.

All the crack troops among his forces shall fall by the sword, and the survivors shall be scattered in every direction. Thus you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken.

▶ 그가 거느린 모든 군대의 정병들은 모두 칼에 맞아 쓰러지고, 남은 자들은 사방으로 흩어질 것이다. 그제야 너희는 나 주님이 말하였음을 알게 될 것이다.

Therefore say: Thus says the Lord GOD: I, too, will take from the crest of the cedar, from its topmost branches tear off a tender shoot, And plant it on a high and lofty mountain;

▶ 주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 내가 손수 높은 향백나무의 꼭대기 순을 따서 심으리라. 가장 높은 가지들에서 연한 것을 하나 꺾어 내가 손수 높고 우뚝한 산 위에 심으리라.

|
on the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it. It shall put forth branches and bear fruit, and become a majestic cedar. Birds of every kind shall dwell beneath it, every winged thing in the shade of its boughs.

▶ 이스라엘의 드높은 산 위에 그것을 심어 놓으면 햇가지가 나고 열매를 맺으며 훌륭한 향백나무가 되리라. 온갖 새들이 그 아래 깃들이고 온갖 날짐승이 그 가지 그늘에 깃들이리라.

And all the trees of the field shall know that I, the LORD, Bring low the high tree, lift high the lowly tree, Wither up the green tree, and make the withered tree bloom. As I, the LORD, have spoken, so will I do.
|

▶ 그제야 들의 모든 나무가 알게 되리라. 높은 나무는 낮추고 낮은 나무는 높이며 푸른 나무는 시들게 하고 시든 나무는 무성하게 하는 이가 나 주님임을 알게 되리라. 나 주님은 말하고 그대로 실천한다.’”
