In the seventh year, on the tenth day of the fifth month, some of the elders of Israel came to consult the LORD and sat down before me.

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

|
Son of man, speak with the elders of Israel and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD: Have you come to consult me? As I live! I swear I will not allow myself to be consulted by you, says the Lord GOD.

▶ “사람의 아들아, 이스라엘의 원로들에게 일러라. ‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 너희는 나에게 문의하려고 왔느냐? 내가 살아 있는 한, 나는 너희의 문의를 받지 않겠다. 주 하느님의 말이다.’ 하고 그들에게 말하여라.

Will you judge them? Will you judge, son of man? Make known to them the abominations of their ancestors
|

|
▶ 네가 오히려 그들을 심판해야 하지 않느냐? 사람의 아들아, 네가 심판해야 하지 않느냐? 그들에게 조상들의 역겨운 짓들을 알려 주어라.

in these words: Thus speaks the Lord GOD: The day I chose Israel, I swore to the descendants of the house of Jacob; in the land of Egypt I revealed myself to them and swore: I am the LORD, your God.

▶ 그들에게 말하여라. ‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 내가 이스라엘을 선택하던 날, 나는 야곱 집안의 후손들에게 손을 들어 맹세하였다. 이집트 땅에서 그들에게 나 자신을 알려 주었다. ′나는 주 너희 하느님이다.′ 하며 그들에게 손을 들어 맹세하였다.

That day I swore to bring them out of the land of Egypt to the land I had scouted for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, a jewel among all lands.
|

▶ 나는 그날, 그들을 이집트 땅에서 이끌어 내어 내가 그들을 위하여 찾아 놓은 땅, 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅, 모든 나라 가운데에서 가장 영화로운 곳으로 데려가겠다고, 그들에게 손을 들어 맹세하였다.

Then I said to them: Throw away, each of you, the detestable things that have held your eyes; do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the LORD, your God.
|

▶ 그리고 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. ′저마다 너희는 눈을 홀리는 그 혐오스러운 것들을 내던지고, 이집트의 우상들로 자신을 부정하게 만들지 마라. 나는 주 너희 하느님이다.′

But they rebelled against me and refused to listen to me; none of them threw away the detestable things that had held their eyes, they did not abandon the idols of Egypt. Then I thought of pouring out my fury on them and spending my anger on them there in the land of Egypt;
|

▶ 그러나 그들은 나에게 반항하고 내 말을 들으려 하지 않았다. 아무도 눈을 홀리는 그 혐오스러운 것들을 내던지지 않고, 이집트의 우상들을 내버리지 않았다. 그래서 나는 이집트 땅 한가운데에서 그들에게 내 화를 퍼붓고 내 분노를 다 쏟겠다고 생각하였다.

but I acted for my name's sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they were, in whose presence I had made myself known to them, revealing that I would bring them out of the land of Egypt.

▶ 그러나 나는 내 이름 때문에 달리 행동하여, 이스라엘과 함께 살던 민족들이 보는 앞에서 내 이름이 더럽혀지지 않게 하였다. 내가 그들을 이집트 땅에서 이끌어 내어, 민족들이 보는 앞에서 나 자신을 그들에게 알려 주었던 것이다.

Therefore I led them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the desert.
|

Then I gave them my statutes and made known to them my ordinances, which everyone must keep, to have life through them.
|

I also gave them my sabbaths to be a sign between me and them, to show that it was I, the LORD, who made them holy.

▶ 나는 또 그들에게 나의 안식일을 나와 그들 사이의 표징으로 주어, 나 주님이 그들을 거룩하게 하는 이라는 것을 알게 하였다.

But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the desert. They did not observe my statutes, and they despised my ordinances that bring life to those who keep them. My sabbaths, too, they desecrated grievously. Then I thought of pouring out my fury on them in the desert to put an end to them,

▶ 그러나 이스라엘 집안은 광야에서 나에게 반항하였다. 누구나 그대로 지키기만 하면 살 수 있는 내 규정들을 따르지 않고, 내 법규들을 업신여겼다. 그들은 내 안식일을 크게 더럽혔다. 그래서 나는 그들에게 내 화를 퍼부어 그들을 없애 버리겠다고 생각하였다.

Nevertheless I swore to them in the desert not to bring them to the land I had given them, a land flowing with milk and honey, a jewel among all lands.

|
So much were their hearts devoted to their idols, they had not lived by my statutes, but despised my ordinances and desecrated my sabbaths.

▶ 그들의 마음이 자기 우상들을 따라가서, 나의 법규들을 업신여기고 나의 규정들을 따르지 않았으며, 나의 안식일을 더럽혔기 때문이다.

But I looked on them with pity, not wanting to destroy them, so I did not put an end to them in the desert.
|

|
|
▶ 그러나 나는 그들을 동정하여 멸망시키지 않았다. 광야에서 그들을 아주 없애 버리지는 않았다.

|
Then I said to their children in the desert: Do not observe the statutes of your parents or keep their ordinances; do not defile yourselves with their idols.
|

|
|
▶ 나는 광야에서 그들의 자손들에게 이렇게 말하였다. ′너희 조상들의 규정들을 따르지 말고 그들의 법규들을 준수하지 말며, 그들의 우상들로 너희 자신을 부정하게 만들지 마라.

I am the LORD, your God: observe my statutes and be careful to keep my ordinances;

|
▶ 나는 주 너희 하느님이다. 나의 규정들을 따르고 나의 법규들을 준수하여 지켜라.

|
keep holy my sabbaths, as a sign between me and you to show that I am the LORD, your God.
|

|
|
▶ 안식일을 거룩하게 지켜, 그것이 나와 너희 사이의 표징이 되게 하고, 나 주님이 너희의 하느님이라는 것을 알아라.′

But their children rebelled against me: they did not observe my statutes or keep my ordinances that bring life to those who observe them, and my sabbaths they desecrated. Then I thought of pouring out my fury on them, of spending my anger on them in the desert;

▶ 그러나 그 자손들도 나에게 반항하였다. 누구나 그대로 지키기만 하면 살 수 있는 내 규정들을 따르지 않고, 내 법규들을 준수하여 지키지 않았으며, 나의 안식일을 더럽혔다. 그래서 나는 광야에서 그들에게 내 화를 퍼붓고 내 분노를 다 쏟겠다고 생각하였다.

but I stayed my hand, acting for my name's sake, lest it be profaned in the sight of the nations in whose presence I brought them out.
|

|
|
▶ 그러나 나는 내 이름 때문에 손을 거두고는 달리 행동하여, 내가 이스라엘을 이끌어 내는 것을 본 민족들 앞에서 내 이름이 더럽혀지지 않게 하였다.

Nevertheless I swore to them in the desert that I would disperse them among the nations and scatter them over foreign lands;
|

|
|
|
▶ 그렇지만 나는, 그들을 민족들 사이로 쫓아 버리고 여러 나라로 흩어 버리겠다고, 광야에서 그들에게 손을 들어 맹세하였다.

for they did not keep my ordinances, but despised my statutes and desecrated my sabbaths, with eyes only for the idols of their fathers.

|
|
▶ 그들이 나의 법규들을 지키지 않고 나의 규정들을 업신여겼으며, 나의 안식일을 더럽히고, 그들의 눈이 자기 조상들의 우상들을 따라갔기 때문이다.

Therefore I gave them statutes that were not good, and ordinances through which they could not live.

I let them become defiled by their gifts, by their immolation of every first-born, so as to make them an object of horror.

▶ 그리하여 그들이 태를 맨 먼저 열고 나온 아들들을 불 속으로 지나가게 하면서 나에게 바친 그 제물들로, 나는 그들을 부정하게 만들었다. 이는 그들을 질겁하게 하여, 내가 주님임을 알게 하려는 것이었다.’

Therefore speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and tell them: Thus says the Lord GOD: In this way also your fathers blasphemed me, breaking faith with me:

▶ 그러므로 사람의 아들아, 이스라엘 집안에게 일러라. 그들에게 말하여라. ‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 너희 조상들은 나를 배신하여 또다시 나를 모욕하였다.

when I had brought them to the land I had sworn to give them, and they saw all its high hills and leafy trees, there they offered their sacrifices (there they brought their offensive offerings), there they sent up appeasing odors, and there they poured out their libations.
|

▶ 내가 일찍이 그들에게 준다고 손을 들어 맹세한 땅으로 그들을 데리고 들어갔더니, 그들은 높은 언덕과 무성한 나무를 볼 때마다, 그곳에서 희생 제물을 바치고 화를 돋우는 봉헌물을 바쳤다. 그곳에 향기로운 제물을 갖다 놓고 제주를 따라 놓았다.

I asked them: To what sort of high place do you betake yourselves? - and so they call it a high place even to the present day.

▶ 그래서 나는 ′너희가 찾아다니는 그 산당이라는 것이 대체 무엇이냐?′ 하고 그들을 꾸짖었다.’ 그리하여 그런 곳이 오늘날까지도 ‘산당’이라 불린다.

|
Therefore say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord GOD: Will you defile yourselves like your fathers? Will you lust after their detestable idols?

▶ 그러므로 이스라엘 집안에게 말하여라. ‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 너희도 조상들의 길을 걸어 자신을 부정하게 만들고, 그들이 받들던 혐오스러운 것들을 따르며 불륜을 저지르려느냐?

|
By offering your gifts, by making your children pass through the fire, you defile yourselves with all your idols even to this day. Shall I let myself be consulted by you, house of Israel? As I live! says the Lord GOD: I swear I will not let myself be consulted by you.

▶ 너희는 제물을 바치고 너희 아들들을 불 속으로 지나가게 하여, 너희의 그 모든 우상과 어울리며 오늘날까지 자신을 부정하게 만들었다. 이스라엘 집안아, 그러면서 나보고 너희의 문의를 받으라는 말이냐? 주 하느님의 말이다. 내가 살아 있는 한, 나는 너희의 문의를 받지 않겠다.

What you are thinking of shall never happen: "We shall be like the nations, like the peoples of foreign lands, serving wood and stone."

|
▶ 너희 영에 떠오르는 생각, ′우리도 다른 민족들처럼, 다른 나라의 족속들처럼 되어 나무와 바위를 섬기자.′ 하는 너희의 생각은 결코 이루어지지 않을 것이다.

|
As I live, says the Lord GOD, with a mighty hand and outstretched arm, with poured-out wrath, I swear I will be king over you!

▶ 주 하느님의 말이다. 내가 살아 있는 한, 나는 강한 손과 뻗은 팔로, 퍼붓는 분노로 너희를 다스리겠다.

With a mighty hand and outstretched arm, with poured-out wrath, I will bring you out from the nations and gather you from the countries over which you are scattered;

▶ 나는 강한 손과 뻗은 팔로, 퍼붓는 분노로 너희가 흩어져 사는 그 여러 민족에게서 너희를 데려 내오고, 그 여러 나라에서 모아들이겠다.

then I will lead you to the desert of the peoples, where I will enter into judgment with you face to face.

|
Just as I entered into judgment with your fathers in the desert of the land of Egypt, so will I enter into judgment with you, says the Lord GOD.

I will count you with the staff and bring back but a small number.

I will separate from you those who have rebelled and transgressed against me; from the land where they sojourned as aliens I will bring them out, but they shall not return to the land of Israel. Thus you shall know that I am the LORD.

As for you, house of Israel, thus says the Lord GOD: Come, each one of you, destroy your idols! Then listen to me, and never again profane my holy name with your gifts and your idols.

For on my holy mountain, on the mountain height of Israel, says the Lord GOD, there the whole house of Israel without exception shall worship me; there I will accept them, and there I will claim your tributes and the first fruits of your offerings, and all that you dedicate.

▶ 주 하느님의 말이다. 나의 거룩한 산, 이스라엘의 드높은 산에서, 온 이스라엘 집안이, 그들이 모두 그 땅에서 나를 섬길 것이다. 나는 거기에서 그들을 기꺼이 받아들이고, 거기에서 너희가 바치는 온갖 거룩한 것과 더불어 너희의 예물과 가장 좋은 선물을 바랄 것이다.

As a pleasing odor I will accept you, when I have brought you from among the nations and gathered you out of the countries over which you were scattered; and by means of you I will manifest my holiness in the sight of the nations.

Thus you shall know that I am the LORD, when I bring you back to the land of Israel, the land which I swore to give to your fathers.

There you shall recall your conduct and all the deeds by which you defiled yourselves; and you shall loathe yourselves because of all the evil things you did.
|

▶ 또한 그곳에서 너희 자신을 부정하게 만든 너희의 길과 모든 행실을 기억하고, 너희가 저지른 그 모든 악행 때문에 자신이 혐오스러워질 것이다.

And you shall know that I am the LORD when I deal with you thus, for my name's sake, and not according to your evil conduct and corrupt actions, O house of Israel, says the Lord GOD.
