인간의 채광 기술 The Inaccessibility of Wisdom
1 정녕 은에는 산지가 있고 금에는 제련하는 곳이 있다네. 1 There is indeed a mine for silver, and a place for gold which men refine.
2 쇠는 땅에서 얻어지고 구리는 바위를 녹여 붓는다네. 2 Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is melted out of stone.
3 어둠에 경계를 두고 막장 속마다 찾는다네, 암흑과 흑암 속의 돌을. 3 He has set a boundary for the darkness; to the farthest confines he penetrates.
4 인가에서 먼 곳에, 사람 발에 잊힌 곳에 갱도를 파 사람들에게서 떨어진 채 매달려 흔들거리네.
5 땅에서는 양식이 솟아나지만 그 밑은 불로 뒤집힌다네. 5 The earth, though out of it comes forth bread, is in fiery upheaval underneath.
6 그곳의 돌은 청옥의 자리 흙가루는 금을 품고 있다네. 6 Its stones are the source of sapphires, and there is gold in its dust.
7 그 길은 어떤 맹금도 알지 못하고 어떤 매의 눈도 본 적이 없으며 7 The path to it no bird of prey knows, nor has the hawk's eye seen that path.
8 야수들도 디뎌 본 적이 없고 사자도 그 위를 밟아 본 적이 없네. 8 The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor has the lion gone that way.
9 단단한 암석에 손을 대어 산들을 뿌리째 파헤치네. 9 He sets his hand to the flinty rock, and overturns the mountains at their foundations.
10 바위에 갱로를 뚫어 그의 눈은 온갖 보석을 확인하고 10 He splits channels in the rocks; his eyes behold all that is precious.
11 물줄기를 흐르지 않게 막고서는 숨겨진 것들을 밝은 데로 가져온다네. 11 He probes the wellsprings of the streams, and brings hidden things to light.
돈으로 살 수 없는 지혜의 가치
12 그러나 지혜는 어디에서 찾을 수 있으리오? 슬기의 자리는 어디리오? 12 But whence can wisdom be obtained, and where is the place of understanding?
13 사람은 그것에 이르는 길을 알지 못하고 생물들의 땅에서는 발견할 수 없다네. 13 Man knows nothing to equal it, nor is it to be had in the land of the living.
14 대양도 “나에게는 그것이 없어.” 하고 바다도 “그것은 내 곁에 없어.” 한다네. 14 The abyss declares, "It is not in me"; and the sea says, "I have it not."
15 금덩어리로도 얻을 수 없고 그 값은 은으로도 잴 수 없으며 15 Solid gold cannot purchase it, nor can its price be paid with silver.
16 오피르의 순금으로도 살 수 없고 값진 마노나 청옥으로도 안 되네. 16 It cannot be bought with gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx or the sapphire.
17 금과 유리도 그와 같을 수 없고 진금 그릇들과도 바꿀 수 없으며 17 Gold or crystal cannot equal it, nor can golden vessels reach its worth.
18 산호와 수정도 말할 나위 없으니 지혜의 값어치는 진주보다 더하네. 18 Neither coral nor jasper should be thought of; it surpasses pearls and
19 에티오피아의 황옥도 그와 같을 수 없으며 순금으로도 그것을 살 수 없다네. 19 Arabian topaz.
지혜를 홀로 아시는 하느님
20 지혜가 어디에서 오리오? 슬기의 자리는 어디리오? 20 Whence, then, comes wisdom, and where is the place of understanding?
21 모든 생물의 눈에 감추어져 있고 하늘의 새들에게도 숨겨져 있다네. 21 It is hid from the eyes of any beast; from the birds of the air it is concealed.
22 멸망의 나라와 죽음도 “우리 귀로 그에 대한 풍문은 들었지.” 한다네. 22 Abaddon and Death say, "Only by rumor have we heard of it."
23 하느님께서 지혜에 이르는 길을 식별해 내시고 그 자리를 알고 계시니 23 God knows the way to it; it is he who is familiar with its place.
24 그분께서는 땅끝까지 살피시고 하늘 아래 모든 것을 보시기 때문이지. 24 For he beholds the ends of the earth and sees all that is under the heavens.
25 바람의 무게를 정하시고 물의 양을 결정하실 때 25 He has weighed out the wind, and fixed the scope of the waters;
26 비의 법칙과 뇌성 번개의 길을 정하실 때 26 When he made rules for the rain and a path for the thunderbolts,
27 그분께서 지혜를 보고 헤아리셨으며 그를 세우고 살피셨다네. 27 Then he saw wisdom and appraised it, gave it its setting, knew it through and through.
사람을 위한 지혜
28 그러고서는 사람에게 말씀하셨네. “보아라, 주님을 경외함이 곧 지혜며 악을 피함이 슬기다.” 28 And to man he said: Behold, the fear of the LORD is wisdom; and avoiding evil is understanding.
