현인들의 다른 말씀
1 악한 사람들을 부러워하지 말고 그들과 어울리려 하지 마라. 1 Be not emulous of evil men, and desire not to be with them;
2 그들 마음은 폭력을 꾀하고 그들 입술은 재앙을 말한다. 2 For their hearts plot violence, and their lips speak of foul play.
3 집은 지혜로 지어지고 슬기로 튼튼해진다. 3 By wisdom is a house built, by understanding is it made firm;
4 방들은 지식으로 말미암아 온갖 귀하고 아름다운 보화가 가득 찬다. 4 And by knowledge are its rooms filled with every precious and pleasing possession.
5 지혜로운 남자는 힘센 자보다 강하고 지식을 갖춘 사람은 장사보다 굳세다. 5 A wise man is more powerful than a strong man, and a man of knowledge than a man of might;
6 전쟁은 현명한 지휘로 수행해야 하고 승리는 조언자들이 많아야 거둘 수 있다. 6 For it is by wise guidance that you wage your war, and the victory is due to a wealth of counselors.
7 지혜는 미련한 자에게 너무나 높아 그는 성문 광장에서 입을 열지 못한다. 7 For a fool, to be silent is wisdom; not to open his mouth at the gate.
8 악행을 저지르려고 궁리하는 자를 음모꾼이라 부른다. 8 He who plots evil doing - men call him an intriguer.
9 미련한 자는 죄악만 꾸며 낸다. 빈정꾼은 사람들이 역겨워한다. 9 Beyond intrigue and folly and sin, it is arrogance that men find abominable.
10 네가 환난을 당할 때에 낙심하면 너의 힘도 줄어든다. 10 If you remain indifferent in time of adversity, your strength will depart from you.
11 죽음에 사로잡힌 이들을 구해 내고 학살에 걸려드는 이들을 빼내어라. 11 Rescue those who are being dragged to death, and from those tottering to execution withdraw not.
12 “이봐, 우리는 그걸 몰랐어.” 하고 네가 말하여도 마음을 살피시는 분께서 알아보시지 않느냐? 영혼을 지켜보시는 분께서 아시고 사람에게 그 행실대로 갚으신다. 12 If you say, "I know not this man!" does not he who tests hearts perceive it? He who guards your life knows it, and he will repay each one according to his deeds.
13 내 아들아, 꿀은 좋은 것이니 먹어라. 송이 꿀도 입에 달다. 13 If you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste;
14 지혜도 네 영혼에 그러함을 알아라. 네가 그것을 얻으면 미래가 있고 네 희망이 끊기지 않는다. 14 Such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul. If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
15 너는 악인처럼 의인의 보금자리를 노리지 말고 그의 안식처를 망쳐 놓지 마라. 15 Lie not in wait against the home of the just man, ravage not his dwelling place;
16 의인은 일곱 번 쓰러져도 일어나지만 악인은 불행 속으로 넘어지기 때문이다. 16 For the just man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble to ruin.
17 네 원수가 쓰러졌다고 기뻐하지 말고 그가 넘어졌다고 마음속으로 즐거워하지 마라. 17 Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles, let not your heart exult,
18 주님께서 그것을 보시고 좋지 않게 여기시어 그에게 내리신 노여움을 돌이키신다. 18 Lest the LORD see it, be displeased with you, and withdraw his wrath from your enemy.
19 악을 행하는 자들 때문에 격분하지 말고 악인들을 부러워하지 마라. 19 Be not provoked with evildoers, nor envious of the wicked;
20 악한 자에게는 미래가 없고 악인의 등불은 꺼지고 만다. 20 For the evil man has no future, the lamp of the wicked will be put out.
21 내 아들아, 주님과 임금을 경외하고 너와 생각이 다른 자들과는 사귀지 마라. 21 My son, fear the LORD and the king; have nothing to do with those who rebel against them;
22 그분들이 내리시는 재앙은 갑자기 들이닥치는 법 그 두 분이 일으키시는 멸망을 누가 알겠는가? 22 For suddenly arises the destruction they send, and the ruin from either one, who can measure?
현인들의 둘째 잠언집
23 이 또한 현인들의 말씀이다. 재판할 때에 한쪽을 편드는 것은 좋지 않다. 23 These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.
24 악인에게 “너는 무죄다!” 말하는 자 백성들이 그를 저주하고 민족들이 그에게 악담한다. 24 He who says to the wicked man, "You are just" - men will curse him, people will denounce him;
25 그러나 공정하게 판결하는 이들은 잘 지내며 좋은 복을 받는다. 25 But those who convict the evildoer will fare well, and on them will come the blessing of prosperity.
26 올바른 대답을 하는 이는 입술을 맞추어 주는 이와 같다. 26 He gives a kiss on the lips who makes an honest reply.
27 바깥일을 정리하고 밭일을 준비한 다음 집을 지어라. 27 Complete your outdoor tasks, and arrange your work in the field; afterward you can establish your house.
28 까닭 없이 이웃을 해치는 증인이 되지 마라. 네 입술로 남을 속이지 마라. 28 Be not a witness against your neighbor without just cause, thus committing folly with your lips.
29 “그가 나에게 한 것처럼 나도 그에게 하여 그 사람이 한 행실대로 갚겠다.” 하지 마라. 29 Say not, "As he did to me, so will I do to him; I will repay the man according to his deeds."
게으름뱅이
30 내가 게으른 사람의 밭과 지각없는 자의 포도원을 지나갔는데 30 I passed by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man without sense;
31 보아라, 온통 엉겅퀴가 우거지고 전부 쐐기풀이 뒤덮었으며 돌담이 무너져 있었다. 31 And behold! it was all overgrown with thistles; its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall broken down.
32 나는 그것을 바라보며 깊이 생각하고 그것을 보며 교훈을 얻었다. 32 And as I gazed at it, I reflected; I saw and learned the lesson:
33 “‘조금만 더 자자. 조금만 더 눈을 붙이자. 손을 놓고 조금만 더 누워 있자!’ 하면 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest -
34 가난이 부랑자처럼, 빈곤이 무장한 군사처럼 너에게 들이닥친다.” 34 Then will poverty come upon you like a highwayman, and want like an armed man.
