What I am offering you is sound doctrine: do not forsake my teaching. |

나도 내 아버지에게 좋은 아들이었으며 내 어머니가 애지중지하는 외아들이었다. |

I too was once a child with a father, in my mother's eyes a tender child, unique. |

아버지께서는 나에게 이렇게 가르치셨다. “내 말을 마음에 간직하고 내 계명을 지켜라. 그러면 네가 살리라. |

This was what he used to teach me, 'Let your heart treasure what I have to say, keep my principles and you will live; |

지혜를 얻고 예지를 얻어라. 내가 한 말을 잊지 말고 어기지 마라. |

acquire wisdom, acquire understanding, never forget her, never deviate from my words. |

지혜를 저버리지 마라. 그것이 너를 보호해 주리라. 지혜를 사랑하여라. 그것이 너를 지켜 주리라. |

Do not desert her, she will keep you safe; love her, she will watch over you. |

지혜를 얻어라. 이것이 곧 지혜의 시작이다. 네가 가진 것을 다하여 예지를 얻어라. |

The first principle of wisdom is: acquire wisdom; at the cost of all you have, acquire understanding! |

지혜를 소중히 여겨라. 그것이 너를 높여 주리라. 지혜를 품으면 그것이 너를 영광스럽게 하리라. |

Hold her close, and she will make you great; embrace her, and she will be your pride; |

그것이 아름다운 화환을 네 머리에 씌워 주고 화려한 관을 너에게 가져다주리라.” |

The Good and the Evil Way |

내 아들아, 들어라. 내 말을 받아들여라. 그것이 네게 수명을 더해 주리라. |

Listen, my child, take my words to heart, and the years of your life will be multiplied. |

내가 너에게 지혜의 길을 가르치고 너를 바른길로 이끌어 주었으니 |

I have educated you in the ways of wisdom, I have guided you along the path of honesty. |

네가 걸을 때 앞길이 막히지 않고 네가 뛰더라도 비틀거리지 않으리라. |

When you walk, your going will be unhindered, if you run, you will not stumble. |

교훈을 놓치지 말고 굳게 잡아라. 그것이 네 생명이니 잘 지켜라. |

Hold fast to discipline, never let her go, keep your eyes on her, she is your life. |

악인들의 길에 들어서지 말고 악한들의 행로를 걷지 마라. |

Do not follow the path of the wicked, do not walk the way that the evil go. |

그런 길은 피하여 발을 들여놓지 말고 발길을 돌려 비켜 가거라. |

Avoid it, do not take it, turn your back on it, pass it by. |

그들은 악을 저지르지 않고는 잠들지 못하고 남을 쓰러트리지 않으면 잠을 설친다. |

For they cannot sleep unless they have first done wrong, they miss their sleep if they have not made someone stumble; |

그들은 불의의 빵을 먹고 폭력의 술을 마신다. |

for the bread of wickedness is what they eat, and the wine of violence is what they drink. |

의인들의 길은 동틀 녘의 빛과 같아 한낮이 될 때까지 점점 밝아지지만 |

The path of the upright is like the light of dawn, its brightness growing to the fullness of day; |

악인들의 길은 암흑과 같아 어디에 걸려 비틀거리는지도 모른다. |

the way of the wicked is as dark as night, they cannot tell the obstacles they stumble over. |

내 아들아, 내 말에 주의를 기울이고 내 이야기에 귀를 기울여라. |

My child, pay attention to what I am telling you, listen carefully to my words; |

그것이 네 눈에서 벗어나지 않도록 네 마음 한가운데에 간직하여라. |

do not let them out of your sight, keep them deep in your heart. |
| 22 |
내 말은 그것을 찾아 얻는 이에게 생명이 되고 그의 온몸에 활력이 되어 준다. |

or they are life to those who find them and health to all humanity. |
| 23 |
무엇보다도 네 마음을 지켜라. 거기에서 생명의 샘이 흘러나온다. |

More than all else, keep watch over your heart, since here are the wellsprings of life. |

거짓된 말을 치워 버리고 비방하는 말을 멀리하여라. |

Turn your back on the mouth that misleads, keep your distance from lips that deceive. |

눈은 똑바로 앞을 바라보고 눈길은 앞으로만 곧게 두어라. |

Let your eyes be fixed ahead, your gaze be straight before you. |
| 26 |
바른길을 걸어라. 네가 가는 길이 모두 튼튼하리라. |

Let the path you tread be level and all your ways be firm. |

오른쪽으로도 왼쪽으로도 벗어나지 말고 악에서 발길을 돌려라. |

Turn neither to right nor to left, keep your foot clear of evil. |
